Author bio
Maria Luis writes romance with a strong sense of place, a quick sense of humor, and characters who rarely make life easy for themselves. She is also a historian, which makes sense once you see how often her stories circle questions of loyalty, family secrets, old wounds, and the trouble people carry with them.
Her life has taken her from Boston's cold winters to New Orleans, with a stop in England along the way. She now lives in New Orleans, a city that turns up often in her work, not as a postcard version of itself but as a lived-in place of neighborhoods, jobs, family ties, and complicated history.
History and romance run alongside each other in her career.
Luis has studied medieval England and nineteenth-century New Orleans, two subjects full of power struggles, scandal, crime, and people trying to survive difficult times. Those interests give her a useful range. She can write a light contemporary romance built around a hockey team or a reality dating show, then move into a much darker story of revenge and dangerous allegiances.
Her first listed novel, Power Play, arrived in 2017 and introduced the Boston Blades hockey world. It pairs struggling sports journalist Charlie Denton with veteran goalie Duke Harrison, turning an unwanted interview assignment into a sharp, funny romance. Later Blades books follow teammates and people in their orbit, including the messy second chance at the center of Body Check and the best-friends-to-marriage arrangement in Slap Shot.
New Orleans is equally important to her contemporary books. The NOLA Heart series begins with Say You'll Be Mine, in which Shaelyn Lawrence returns home to care for her grandmother and runs into Detective Brady Taylor, the first love she left behind. The later books keep the city close, following detectives, a crime lab technician, a wounded veteran, a tattoo artist, and a beauty influencer whose lives overlap in unexpected ways.
Luis also enjoys romance setups that put people in close quarters and give them something to argue about. Hold Me Today starts with a salon renovation and a fake-girlfriend deal. Kiss Me Tonight brings a disgraced football personality to small-town Maine, where he has to work alongside a woman determined to coach high school football on her own terms. Love Me Tomorrow returns to New Orleans for a friends-to-lovers story involving a family business, a tattoo shop, and a reality-show past.
Then there is her darker side.
The Blood Duet, beginning with Sworn, follows Avery Washington and Lincoln Asher through a New Orleans underworld shaped by loss, revenge, and dangerous attraction. In the Broken Crown books, starting with Road To Fire, Luis shifts to a tense royal world centered on London, the Crown, and people whose personal loyalties have political consequences. The mood is heavier, but the focus remains on characters trying to claim some control over their lives.
When she is not writing or working with history, Luis has said she enjoys reality television, hot chocolate, adventures with her partner, and time with her two dogs. That mix of research, modern pop culture, and everyday humor fits her books well. Her romances can be playful or dark, but they keep coming back to the same question: what happens when someone who has learned to protect their heart finally meets the person who makes that impossible?
