Mara and Dann

by Doris Lessing

1999

Thousands of years in the future, after ice and drought have reshaped Earth, orphaned siblings Mara and Dann trek north across the parched continent of Ifrik in search of water and safety. Their journey becomes a fierce adventure and a parable about survival and memory.

Series background & context

The Mara and Dann books imagine a distant future in which the Earth's climate has swung violently. Ice sheets cover much of the northern hemisphere, while the southern continent of Ifrik is drying into dust. Against this backdrop Lessing follows two siblings as they try to stay alive and to understand the broken world they have inherited.

In Mara and Dann the children of a once ruling family are smuggled out of their city after a coup. Seven year old Mara and four year old Dann are left with an old woman, Daima, in a poor village of Rock People, far from the sophisticated Mahondi culture into which they were born. Drought, hunger, and the threat of violence are constant. As they grow, rumours of water and safety somewhere to the north pull at them, and after Daima's death they begin a long, dangerous journey.

The road north takes them through scorched plains, ruined towns, and fragments of half remembered technology. They encounter slave traders, soldiers, scholars, and farmers trying to rebuild some kind of order. Mara is practical, tough, and curious, always looking for maps, books, and stories that might explain how the world reached this state. Dann is more impulsive and inward, carrying trauma from his early childhood and vulnerable to addiction and grand schemes.

By the end of the first book they have reached lands where ancient cities lie drowned, libraries still stand in places, and traces of past civilisations can be read, if only partially. The novel works both as a survival adventure and as a meditation on cycles of rise and collapse, and on the stubbornness of hope.

The Story of General Dann and Mara's Daughter, Griot and the Snow Dog returns to this world years later. The climate has shifted again toward cold and ice. Dann, now a reluctant general, is haunted by loss and by what he has seen in his campaigns. He is surrounded by younger people who expect leadership from him, including Tamar, Mara's daughter, and Griot, a former child soldier who has become his close companion. A loyal dog shadows him through frozen landscapes and half flooded ruins.

In this second volume Lessing is interested in what happens after the adventure, when the task is not simply to survive but to build something more stable in a damaged environment. The discovery of a hidden library, full of crumbling books from lost ages, underlines both the fragility of knowledge and the human urge to keep records.

Together, the Mara and Dann novels offer a bleak yet strangely tender vision of human beings adapting, failing, and trying again in the long aftermath of environmental catastrophe.
