Series background & context

The Magisterium series, co written with Holly Black, takes Cassandra Clare’s love of magic and friendship into a younger corner of fantasy. The five books follow Callum Hunt, a twelve year old boy who has been raised to fear magic and the underground school where young mages are trained.

When Call is forced to take the entrance trials for the Magisterium, he does everything he can to fail and is horrified to be selected anyway. Once he arrives, he discovers a sprawling cavern school carved into rock, full of elementals, dangerous experiments, and teachers whose methods can be as unsettling as the enemies they are preparing their students to fight.

Over the course of The Iron Trial, The Copper Gauntlet, The Bronze Key, The Silver Mask, and The Golden Tower, Call and his friends Tamara and Aaron confront mysteries tied to a past war against a mage known as the Enemy of Death. Secrets about Call’s own identity and destiny keep raising the question of whether he is meant to save the magical world or destroy it.

The tone blends school story humor and friendship drama with real darkness, including questions of free will, sacrifice, and second chances. The elemental magic system feels tactile and sometimes dangerous, and the series does not always take the path readers expect.

Although it shares some themes with the Shadowhunter books, the Magisterium stories take place in their own universe. They are a good fit for middle grade readers or anyone who likes magic schools, twist heavy plots, and a hero who is never entirely sure he deserves to be one.
