Author bio

Maggie Robinson was born in Mineola, New York, and grew up in the suburbs around New York City. She later made her home in Maine, a move that shows up again and again in the way she talks about winter, work, and the pleasure of staying inside to write. (british-weekly.com)

Writing came late. (penguinrandomhouse.com)

She studied English at Adelphi University, but fiction was not her first full-time plan. Before novels took over, she worked as a teacher, library clerk, newspaper reporter, administrative assistant for nonprofits, and community volunteer, all while raising four children. Those jobs gave her a feel for deadlines, people, and the small absurdities of ordinary life, which helps explain why even her most glamorous characters tend to feel a little lived-in. (penguinrandomhouse.com)

Her turn toward writing started with one of those stories that sounds made up until you hear it more than once. Robinson has said she woke in the middle of the night, annoyed with her husband, and got out of bed to create the perfect man on a computer screen instead. She later admitted that fictional men can be just as stubborn as real ones, but by then she had found the work she wanted to do. (penguinrandomhouse.com)

That sleepless night changed everything. (penguinrandomhouse.com)

Her early published books include Tempting Eden and Any Wicked Thing, which appeared under the name Margaret Rowe before the Maggie Robinson name became more familiar to romance readers. From there she built out a long run of historical romance, including Mistress By Mistake, Lord Gray's List, In the Arms of the Heiress, and Schooling the Viscount. Readers who enjoy her work usually point to the same pleasures: quick banter, women with more backbone than society expects, men trying to recover from old mistakes, and just enough scandal to keep the whole thing lively. (penguinrandomhouse.com)

She has a knack for building worlds that feel playful on the surface and a little bruised underneath. In the Cotswold books, aristocrats are sent to a village for what amounts to Victorian rehab. In the Ladies Unlaced novels, clever women take on jobs and disguises that give them room to maneuver in a rigid society. Even when the books are sexy and funny, Robinson keeps coming back to the same questions: who gets forgiven, who gets trapped by reputation, and what it takes for damaged people to start over. (penguinrandomhouse.com)

She also shifted comfortably into mystery with the Lady Adelaide books, beginning with Nobody's Sweetheart Now. Those novels move into 1920s England and pair a sharp-eyed widow, a ghostly ex-husband, and Detective Inspector Devenand Hunter in stories that mix murder, romance, and dry humor. It is a good example of Robinson's range: she can write steam, but she can also write atmosphere, family comedy, and the kind of clue-filled plotting that makes a country-house mystery fun. (sourcebooks.com)

Over the years her books have been translated into nine languages, and she has been nominated more than once for a Romantic Times Reviewers' Choice award. The picture that emerges from her author bios is pleasingly unpretentious: a transplanted New Yorker in Maine, still writing about imperfect people, bad decisions, and the stubborn possibility of redemption. It suits her books. They may flirt with gossip and glamour, but they are usually most interested in what happens after the mistake, when people have to decide who they want to be next.
