Long Gray Target is Roger Maxim's long-form naval saga, built around the destroyer USS Woodside and the officers and enlisted men who keep her going. The series starts before the United States is officially at war, which gives the opening books an unusual tension. Commander Ed Palmer is the main steady presence early on, but this is really an ensemble story. After The Guns Are Silenced follows the crew into demobilization, jobs, families, and the awkward business of coming home as changed people. Then WOODSIDE Returns brings some of them back into uniform for the Korean War, and Asian STALEMATE carries the ship into a later stretch of Pacific tension and uncertainty. That gives the full run a wider historical sweep than many wartime series.
