Author bio
Claudia Gray is the pen name of Amy Vincent, a writer who has moved easily between paranormal romance, science fiction, mystery, and Star Wars tie-ins. She was born and mostly raised in Marks, Mississippi, with a brief childhood stretch in Massachusetts when her father's army service moved the family. Books were there early, and so was the habit of reading everything she could find.
That part never left her.
Before fiction paid the bills, she took a winding road through journalism, law school, and legal work. She studied journalism in Missouri, later lived in New York City, and also spent time in New Orleans, where she went to law school and worked as a lawyer before shifting into legal marketing. It was not a neat, straight line to novelist, which may be one reason her books are so good at handling people who feel caught between worlds.
The turn toward fiction began online. Gray has said she started by writing fan fiction on the internet, and after a few years realized she could handle novel-length work. She sold her first books in 2006, and once she knew writing could support her, she left her day job and stayed with it.
Then Evernight hit.
That 2008 debut launched a vampire boarding-school series built around Bianca Olivier, Lucas Ross, and a steady stream of secrets. Readers who came for the romance often stayed for the twists, the gothic school setting, and Gray's knack for keeping emotional stakes clear even when the plot gets wild.
She did not stay in one lane for long. The Firebird books, beginning with A Thousand Pieces of You, lean into multiverse science fiction and big romantic choices. The Constellation trilogy, starting with Defy the Stars, pairs a soldier and an artificial life-form in a space war and asks what, exactly, counts as human. And with Lost Stars, Leia, Princess of Alderaan, Bloodline, and Master & Apprentice, she became one of the most trusted novelists working in Star Wars.
Even when the genre changes, her storytelling has a recognizable shape. She likes capable young people, emotionally messy choices, and worlds with rules that matter. Whether the setting is a haunted academy, a collapsing space station, or an Austen drawing room, her stories tend to move fast, but they leave room for tenderness, regret, and the occasional dry joke.
More recently, she has shown how comfortable she is with mystery as well. The Murder of Mr. Wickham starts the Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney books, a clever run of murder stories that brings together the children and relations of Jane Austen characters. Across all these series, you can see the same interests popping up: old houses, history, politics, people with divided loyalties, and love stories tested by impossible circumstances.
Gray now lives in Turin, Italy, with her husband Paul and a small dog named Peaches. It feels fitting. Her books are full of characters crossing borders, literal and emotional, and figuring out who they want to be on the other side.
