Author bio

Roger Maxim writes World War II historical fiction with a clear mission. He wants to put readers on the deck of a destroyer or in the cockpit of a fighter and keep the history close without losing the fun of the story. He is a U.S. Navy veteran, and he has said his fascination with the war began when he was a child listening to his father's war stories.

That interest deepened during his own military service. He has written about visiting places like Pearl Harbor, Guam, the Philippines, and Japan, and about how those visits made the history feel immediate instead of distant. One memory stands out in particular, a port call at Pearl Harbor when his ship anchored within sight of the Arizona Memorial and he found himself imagining the attack that took place there.

Airplanes got to him early.

One of Maxim's earliest memories, by his own account, is looking up and watching an airplane pass overhead. He has loved airplanes and flying ever since, and that comes through on page after page. In Aluminum Rain and the rest of the Watson Saga, he follows young naval aviator Dave Watson through the Pacific war from the cockpit outward, mixing fear, skill, and the steep learning curve of combat.

It shows in his other books too. Red Flight, Break! tracks Thomas Peters from graduation into the brutal air war over Europe, while Pacific on Fire carries that story into the fight against Japan. Maxim tends to write about people who are young enough to still be figuring themselves out, but old enough to be handed enormous responsibility very fast.

He is just as interested in ships as in planes. The Long Gray Target and its sequels move aboard the USS Woodside, where convoy duty, submarine hunts, Pacific action, and later homecoming problems all become part of the same long story. The appeal is not only battle. It is also routine, tension, weather, machinery, orders, and the way a crew learns to live with danger as part of the workday.

Then there is When Then Is Now, which widens the frame. That series begins with the Peace Conference of 1919 and follows two young men on opposite sides of the world as politics, national choices, and the slow build toward another war shape their lives. Maxim likes action, but he also likes tracing how decisions made in conference rooms can land on families, pilots, and sailors decades later.

He has said his goals are simple, entertain the reader and share the rich history and details of the time.

Public biographical details about Maxim are fairly spare, and that fits the books well enough. What comes through most clearly is a long-running fascination with World War II, especially naval service and aviation, and a desire to turn that fascination into readable adventure. His fiction keeps returning to young servicemen under pressure, to the Atlantic and Pacific theaters, and to the uneasy stretch between history as fact and history as lived experience.
