Author bio

L.L. Muir writes the kind of stories that make perfect sense once you know a few things about her. She loves Scottish characters. She spent years building a life outside publishing. And when writing finally pulled hard enough, she listened.

She grew up in Spokane, Washington, where an elementary school librarian helped set the whole thing in motion by slipping young Lesli a book from the back room. That early nudge stuck. Like a lot of future writers, though, she took the long way around.

Before she was publishing novels, Muir worked for years as a florist and became an award-winning floral designer. She eventually opened her own shop, The Scottish Rose. That name tells you a lot. Scotland was already living in her imagination long before she began writing full time.

The real turn came later.

One summer she read Diana Gabaldon's Outlander, then watched The Phantom of the Opera for the first time not long after. Those two experiences seem to have shaken something loose. She closed her flower shop, stayed home to care for her son, and finally gave writing the room it had been asking for. She wrote fast, found an agent in 2010, then spent a couple of discouraging years waiting for a traditional deal that never arrived. Instead of quitting, she tried self-publishing. That changed everything.

Her first published novel was Christmas Kiss, a Highlander holiday time-travel romance, and it helped launch the thread that still runs through so much of her work: modern women, Scottish heroes, a touch of magic, and love stories that have to fight across time. Readers who start there usually see right away that Muir likes emotional stakes, but she also likes a wink, a joke, or a situation that gets delightfully out of hand.

From there, her catalogue widened. Ross and the rest of The Curse of Clan Ross lean into time travel, witches, prophecy, and messy Highland family history. The Gathering opens up The Ghosts of Culloden Moor, her huge shared-world series about Jacobite ghosts given one last shot at life, love, and closure. And in books like Blood for Ink, she shifts into Regency romance with secret identities, social danger, and women trying to carve out a little freedom in a world that keeps trying to box them in.

She also wrote young adult paranormal fiction, including Somewhere Over the Freaking Rainbow, which shows that her interest in hidden worlds and dangerous loyalties is not limited to adult romance. Across the board, her stories tend to come back to a few favorite things: Scottish settings, haunted pasts, second chances, stubborn heroines, and men who have to learn that love asks more of them than pride ever did.

That mix has found a loyal readership. Muir has talked openly about building her career as an independent author, wearing all the hats that come with it, and figuring things out as she went. It is a practical, hard-working kind of success story, which feels very much in step with the books themselves.

She has also written western romance under the name Bella Bowen.

These days, Muir has been described as living with her husband in the Rocky Mountain region, and the picture fits. Her work feels rooted in both imagination and routine, in a person who spent a long time making beautiful things with her hands and then turned that same energy toward stories. The flowers changed. The instinct to build something vivid and memorable did not.
