Series background & context
The Ghosts of Culloden Moor starts with one sharp idea and then runs a very long, satisfying distance with it. Seventy-nine Highland warriors died on Culloden Moor in 1746. In L.L. Muir's world, they never quite leave. A young Muir witch named Soncerae, usually called Soni, offers them a way out: step back into mortal life for a short time, do something worthy, and choose what matters more, revenge or love.
That is the engine of the whole series.
Some books stay close to modern Scotland. Others jump into different places and periods. But the emotional shape is consistent. Each ghost has unfinished business. Some want vengeance. Some want answers. Some barely know what they want until they are dropped into a new life with a woman who will not let them hide behind old legends about honor. The trick of the series is that these men think they are chasing closure, when very often they are being pushed toward change.
Soni is important, even when she is not center stage. So is Rule McEwan, whose story helps open the door in The Gathering. Together they establish the rules, the stakes, and the sorrow hanging over the whole project. Culloden is not just a cool backdrop here. It is the wound every book keeps circling back to, whether through grief, guilt, rage, or the plain terror of being asked to move on.
What makes the series work is its flexibility. One book can feel like a fish-out-of-water romance. Another can lean into mystery, history, or danger. Another can be unexpectedly funny. Because each Highlander gets his own turn, the books can play with tone while still living inside the same magical framework. Some heroes are noble. Some are vain. Some are damaged. Some are absolute fools until love slows them down.
That variety helps a lot.
The heroines are just as important as the men. They are runaways, artists, researchers, women in trouble, women causing trouble, and women who have no intention of being impressed by a man in a kilt just because he has dramatic cheekbones and two hundred years of longing behind him. The romances work best when both people have something real to learn.
At heart, this is a second-chance series. Not second chance between former lovers, though sometimes that happens too. Second chance at being brave. Second chance at choosing mercy over pride. Second chance at living a life that is more than the worst thing that ever happened to you.
If you want one tidy central couple, this is not that. If you want a big interconnected Highlander paranormal romance series where history, magic, and tenderness keep colliding, it very much is. Start with The Gathering, then follow the ghosts one by one as they step off the moor and try, sometimes awkwardly, to become men with futures again.
