Witches of Falls County takes L.L. Muir into cozy paranormal mystery territory, and the shift is a fun one. The first book, Be Witched, sets the tone with a young fortune-teller, a murder investigation, and an owlet with what is described as an identity crisis. That tells you right away this series is willing to blend danger with charm.

The setting does a lot of the work.

Falls County, and the small-town spaces around it, gives Muir a place where everybody is close enough to notice each other's business and not nearly honest enough about what they know. That is ideal for cozy mystery. Add witches to the mix and suddenly gossip, intuition, and local folklore can all matter in practical ways.

The first story centers on a young witch who becomes a murder suspect. That is a good launch point because it gives the book both urgency and personality. The heroine is not solving a puzzle from a safe distance. She is inside it. The investigator circling nearby needs her help, or at least her insight, but he also has to decide whether he can trust the very person others are prepared to blame.

That relationship is what makes the series feel like Muir.

Even when she moves genres, she likes emotional tension to sit close beside plot tension. Here that means the mystery matters, but so does the pull between the woman under suspicion and the man trying to sort truth from danger. There is a romantic current, but it does not drown out the investigation. Instead it sharpens it.

The tone is lighter than her darker historical or ghostly work. Not empty, just lighter. There is room for odd details, familiar faces, and a little eccentric magic. The planned continuation of the series suggests this world was built to support more cases, more witchy complications, and more small-town trouble.

So if you like your mysteries with a paranormal slant, a little warmth, and a heroine whose gifts are as much a liability as a strength, Witches of Falls County is a promising place to start. It feels like Muir using her love of magic and complicated attraction in a new key, quieter than the Highland epics, but still full of movement.
