Author bio

LJ Ross grew up in Ponteland, a village in Northumberland, surrounded by the castles, islands and wild coastline that later seeped into her fiction. As a child she read widely, from classic adventures to crime and romantic epics, and stored away a lifelong love of story.

Instead of heading straight for publishing, she studied law at King’s College London, taking both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees before continuing her legal studies in Paris and Florence. Those years in big cities gave her a new perspective on the quieter northern landscape she’d left behind.

Ross spent much of her twenties working as a regulatory lawyer in the City of London. The work was demanding and high‑pressure, and over time she began to feel that the career she had worked so hard for no longer fit the life she wanted.

During maternity leave with her son, she finally gave serious attention to the crime stories that had been simmering in the background. Drawing on memories of Lindisfarne—Holy Island—off the Northumberland coast, she wrote a murder mystery that combined a brooding tidal landscape, a damaged detective and echoes of ancient ritual.

Like many new writers, Ross first queried agents and publishers and received interest, but she wasn’t convinced traditional deals would give her the freedom she wanted. Encouraged by her husband, she turned to a then‑new option: publishing Holy Island herself through a digital platform and becoming, in effect, her own small press.

The gamble paid off quickly. Released in January 2015, Holy Island climbed to number one in the UK ebook charts by May, even briefly dislodging The Girl on the Train, and introduced readers to DCI Ryan, a homicide detective seeking quiet on a remote island when murder strikes again.

Ross followed that breakout with a steady rhythm of new DCI Ryan novels set across Northumberland, County Durham and Newcastle, often using real landmarks such as Hadrian’s Wall, Durham Cathedral, Kielder Forest and Bamburgh Castle as backdrops for modern crimes. Along the way she created two more connected series: the Dr Alexander Gregory psychological thrillers, which send a forensic psychiatrist around Ireland, Paris, New York and London, and the Summer Suspense Mysteries, twisty stand‑alone tales set in sun‑drenched corners of Cornwall.

By the mid‑2020s she had written more than thirty novels, sold over ten million copies and accumulated more than twenty UK number‑one bestsellers across digital formats. In 2024, reading‑platform data placed her as one of the most read authors in the UK over the previous decade, a rare achievement for a writer who has remained independent throughout.

Independence is a deliberate choice. Through her own imprint, Dark Skies Publishing, Ross manages every stage of production with a small team, from commissioning cover art to overseeing print, audio and foreign editions. That control has also allowed her to fund and launch several prizes that celebrate creativity in the North East, including the Lindisfarne Prize for Crime Fiction, the Northern Photography Prize and the Northern Film Prize, as well as the Everyday Kindness charity anthology supporting housing charity work.

Ross now lives back in Northumberland with her husband and two children, not far from the beaches and moorland that sparked her earliest stories. When she isn’t drafting another mystery, she spends time championing local arts and literacy projects, keeping her work closely tied to the region that first made her want to write.
