Series background & context

The Alexander Gregory series shifts the focus from police work to the mind of a profiler. Dr Alexander Gregory is a forensic psychologist and psychiatrist with an unnerving knack for understanding violent offenders, even when he’d rather not. At the start of Impostor he has stepped away from an elite criminal profiling unit after a scandal, hoping to live quietly in the west of Ireland, but the local Gardaí pull him back in when a serial killer begins targeting their small community.

Each book drops Gregory into a different, high‑pressure environment. In Impostor he moves through tight-knit rural parishes and the misty hills of County Mayo. In Hysteria he’s flown to Paris during fashion week, where models are being murdered and the surviving witness has locked herself inside her own trauma. Bedlam sends him to a secluded psychiatric hospital in the Catskill Mountains, while Mania draws him into London’s theatre world after a star collapses onstage.

Later instalments fold in a long‑running case that haunts Gregory’s conscience. Panic deals with the fallout from the wrongful conviction of an innocent man in a series of Soho murders; senior figures connected to that trial start dying, and Gregory isn’t sure whether he is dealing with revenge, a copycat, or something more complicated. In Amnesia, an attack leaves two women he cares about critically injured, and evidence suggests that one of them may have killed—a twist that forces him to question how well he really knows the people closest to him.

While the plots are pacy and often violent, the draw here is psychological. Gregory is brilliant but far from invulnerable. He wrestles with insomnia, guilt and the weight of seeing the worst of human behaviour up close. His relationship with mentor Bill Douglas, and his cautious attempts to build friendships and romance despite his work, add warmth and give the stories a human-scale counterpoint to the darkness of the crimes.

Compared with the DCI Ryan series, these books have an international, almost globe‑trotting feel, moving between Ireland, France, the United States and different corners of the UK. The investigative tools also shift: instead of squad rooms and beat officers, you get interview rooms, clinical observations and tense sessions where a single slip in judgement could push a fragile witness over the edge.

If you enjoy crime novels that lean into profiling, motive and the blurred line between patient and perpetrator, the Alexander Gregory books are a good place to start with LJ Ross. They’re tightly linked in character terms but each case is self‑contained, so you can follow Gregory’s journey in order or cherry‑pick the settings that appeal most.
