Author bio
Liz Pichon was born in London in 1963 and grew up in Hampstead, where drawing and making things were the parts of school she enjoyed most. She filled exercise books with cartoons and copied characters from comics, long before she imagined those doodles might become a job.
At Brookfield Primary and later St Augustine’s in Kilburn, she loved stories but struggled with spelling and neat handwriting. Looking back, she has described how obvious reading and writing problems were brushed off, and how easy it was to assume that books were something other people created. That experience would quietly shape the kind of stories she later wanted to make for children who didn’t see themselves as “good readers.”
After school she studied graphic design at Camberwell School of Art. The course let her lean into illustration, turning the quirky, energetic style she’d developed as a child into a professional skill. Her first job out of college was as an art director for a record label, designing album covers and organising photo shoots from a very unglamorous office in a portable cabin.
Eventually she left to work freelance, putting her designs on greeting cards, T‑shirts and all sorts of products. Publishers began to ask her to illustrate picture books, and from there it was a short hop to writing and illustrating stories of her own. Early titles such as Square-Eyed Pat, My Big Brother, Boris, The Very Ugly Bug and Bored Bill mixed bold colour, offbeat humour and strong, simple emotions. My Big Brother, Boris went on to win a Smarties Book Prize silver award, confirming that her voice connected with young families.
The big turning point came when she decided to try a book for older readers that still felt as playful as a picture book. She imagined a boy who wrote and doodled in his own school notebook, and the first rough version of The Brilliant World of Tom Gates was born. Tom’s scrawly handwriting, doodles in the margins and running commentary on family, school and biscuits became the heart of the series.
Published in 2011, The Brilliant World of Tom Gates won several major children’s awards and kicked off a long‑running series. Since then Tom’s world has grown into many books, including Everything's Amazing, Genius Ideas, Is Absolutely Fantastic (at Some Things), Family, Friends and Furry Creatures, Ten Tremendous Tales, Random Acts of Fun, Happy to Help (Eventually), Five Star Stories and the activity‑packed Book of Everything!. The books have sold millions of copies around the world and been translated into dozens of languages, but they still feel like pages torn from one kid’s overstuffed notebook.
Pichon’s own experience with undiagnosed dyslexia feeds into the way she designs every page. The stories use different fonts, clear spacing and lots of drawings so that readers who might be daunted by blocks of text can dip in, laugh and keep going. Many of the books include how‑to‑draw pages and creative prompts, inviting children to copy Tom’s doodles, invent band posters or design monsters of their own.
Her work now stretches beyond the original novels. Shoe Wars introduced a new cast in a gadget‑filled adventure, and a full‑colour graphic series called Meet the Mubbles has brought her busy, cartoon style to younger readers again. Tom himself has stepped off the page into a touring stage show and a television series, with Pichon involved in the scripts, songs and on‑screen drawing segments.
Away from the books, she has created large collaborative art projects with schools, including a giant “Kids’ Tapestry” inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry, and helped set a Guinness World Record for a huge school disco. She has also designed charity T‑shirts and fronted drawing workshops, always circling back to the idea that drawing and storytelling are for everyone.
Pichon lives in Brighton with her husband, music producer Mark Flannery, and their three children. When she is not working on new stories, she spends time visiting schools and festivals, showing children how a simple doodle can grow into a whole world on the page.
