Series background & context
The Tom Gates books follow the everyday life of schoolboy Tom, told in the form of his heavily doodled exercise book. Each story reads like a handwritten diary, full of cartoons, scribbles and notes squeezed into every spare space on the page.
Tom is around ten, lives with his mum and dad and big sister Delia, and goes to Oakfield Primary School. He sits in Mr Fullerman’s Class 5F under the watchful eye of head teacher Mr Keen, though lessons are often interrupted by daydreaming, doodling or last‑minute homework panics. His best friend Derek lives next door, his band DogZombies takes up most of his brain space, and his main enemies are smug classmate Marcus and grumpy Delia.
Home life is busy and noisy. Tom’s parents veer between patient and exasperated as they juggle work, money worries and their son’s creative excuses. His grandparents on Dad’s side are known as the Fossils, while Mum’s parents, the Wrinklies, bring chaos, surprises and over‑enthusiastic support. Family events like anniversaries, holidays and school concerts often spiral into the kind of disaster that Tom later turns into very funny pictures.
Most of the books revolve around small but important kid problems: missing permission slips, disastrous school photos, band competitions, family trees, annoying neighbours and the terror of bringing in baby photos. Titles such as The Brilliant World of Tom Gates, Everything's Amazing, Genius Ideas, Is Absolutely Fantastic (at Some Things) and Top of the Class build up Tom’s world one mishap at a time, while DogZombies Rule, Biscuits, Bands and Very Big Plans and Epic Adventure lean into his dreams of musical greatness.
Later books mix straight stories with collections and activity mash‑ups. Ten Tremendous Tales gathers shorter adventures about parades, lifts, teachers and tiny ants in pants, while Random Acts of Fun, Happy to Help (Eventually) and Five Star Stories show Tom dealing with boredom, chores and storytelling competitions. Mega Make and Do and Stories Too! and Book of Everything! add pages of crafts, games, doodling prompts and fill‑in sections, turning readers into collaborators.
Across the series, the tone stays light, warm and properly silly. The books are packed with different fonts and black‑and‑white artwork, which makes them inviting for reluctant readers or anyone who likes to flip rather than plough through dense text. Many include simple drawing lessons and make‑and‑do ideas so that kids can copy Tom’s style and create their own pages.
Tom’s world has also jumped off the page into stage shows and a television series, but in the books he never grows up or moves on from Class 5F. Each volume can be read as a stand‑alone, yet together they build a familiar universe of school corridors, biscuit crumbs, band rehearsals and slightly disastrous family outings where, somehow, everything turns out all right in the end.
