She came to fiction a little later than some writers.

In 2010, after her family moved to a new town and a new state, Maxwell started writing while home with two small children. She has said she began as a way to keep herself sane. Her first books already show what she likes to do. Sweet Unrest mixes romance, old secrets, and a strong Louisiana setting, pulling a practical teenager into dreams, ghosts, and spiritual danger around New Orleans. Its follow-up, Gathering Deep, returns to that same world from a different angle and digs deeper into family history, possession, and the darker edges of inherited magic. Then came Unhooked, her dark take on Neverland. Instead of treating Peter Pan as cozy fantasy, Maxwell makes the setting feel unstable and dangerous, with memory, desire, and survival all tangled together. It is a good example of how she likes to take familiar story pieces and turn them until they feel new again.

Then The Last Magician changed the scale.

That novel, and the books that follow it, brought together time travel, magic, heists, and Gilded Age New York in a way that found a big audience. The Last Magician became a New York Times bestseller, and the series grew through The Devil's Thief, The Serpent's Curse, and The Shattered City. These books are bigger and twistier than her earlier work, but they keep the same strengths: sharp momentum, morally complicated choices, and settings so vivid they feel like active parts of the story.

That sense of place runs through almost everything she writes. Haunted Louisiana, a brutal Neverland, old New York under the shadow of the Brink, and the eerie countryside of Keeper of the Rend all shape how her characters move and what they fear. Places in her fiction are not just backdrops. They trap, tempt, warn, and sometimes lie. Maxwell tends to write young people who begin with only part of the truth, then have to sort through lies, family secrets, and systems much bigger than themselves.
