Author bio
Lindsey Kelk grew up in Doncaster in South Yorkshire, where reading and daydreaming about stories took up most of her spare time. She has said she was always the kid with a book in her hand and started writing her own tales early on.
After studying at Nottingham Trent University, she moved to London and, like many of her heroines, tried on a few careers before finding the right fit. She worked in PR and then spent several years as a children's book editor, learning how publishing works from the inside.
Her break into fiction came after a holiday to New York. Back home in London and nursing a serious case of post-trip blues, she started writing what would become I Heart New York as a kind of "what if" escape from a life that felt stuck. The story of a woman fleeing a terrible wedding and starting again in Manhattan struck a nerve.
Kelk has talked about how that first manuscript did the rounds with agents, picking up rejections until a roundabout recommendation landed it on an editor’s desk at a major publisher. Instead of asking her to change her name or her book, they offered a three‑book deal and the idea that the I Heart story could be a whole series.
Since then, the I Heart novels have followed Angela Clark from New York to Hollywood, Paris, Vegas, London, a very festive New York and finally Hawaii, mixing romance, friendship and city‑break escapism. The books have been translated into many languages, sold more than a million copies, and turned Kelk into a regular name on commercial fiction shelves.
Alongside Angela’s adventures, Kelk has built a whole line‑up of contemporary romantic comedies. The Single Girl’s To-Do List and its follow‑up novella The Bride-To-Be's To-Do List follow list‑obsessed makeup artist Rachel Summers as her life veers off script. The Tess Brookes trilogy – starting with About a Girl and continuing in What a Girl Wants and A Girl’s Best Friend – tracks a burnt‑out advertising creative who accidentally talks her way into a photography career, a love triangle and a lot of air miles.
Standalone novels such as Always the Bridesmaid, We Were On A Break, One in a Million and In Case You Missed It play with familiar turning points: broken engagements, stalled careers, social media bets and the temptation to move back in with your parents. More recent books – including On a Night Like This, The Christmas Wish, Love Me Do, Love Story and Christmas Fling – lean into high‑concept setups like a glittering Italian ball, a Christmas time loop or a fake‑dating holiday, while still feeling grounded in recognisable twenty‑ and thirty‑something lives.
Kelk also writes for younger readers. Her Cinders & Sparks trilogy is a slapstick, fairy‑tale mash‑up about a girl, a very unreliable fairy godmother called Brian and a talking dog. With the Savannah Red series, beginning with The Bell Witches, she steps into YA fantasy, following a grieving teenager who discovers that her new Southern relatives are keeping magical secrets.
Before writing full time, she contributed to women’s magazines and had a regular column, and that experience of talking directly to readers shows in her chatty, confiding style. Away from books, she co‑hosts a beauty podcast and a pro‑wrestling podcast, a combination that neatly sums up her interests: lipstick, storylines and larger‑than‑life characters.
After several years living in New York, Kelk moved again and now calls Los Angeles home. She lives there with her husband, editor Jeff Israel, and their cats, and continues to write stories about women who are a bit lost, a bit hopeful and very funny as they figure out what comes next.
