Janelle Mowery came to fiction after spending several years writing and coordinating content for The Invisible Connection, a children's ministry website. When that project ended in 2000, she looked for another way to share the faith-centered ideas that mattered to her. Fiction became the answer.
She began trying her hand at novels in early 2001. It was not an overnight switch from reader to published author. Mowery carried story ideas around, planned them out, and kept writing while she learned how the business worked.
She kept going.
In 2002, Mowery joined American Christian Fiction Writers. The organization gave her a writing community, critique partners, and a reason to take her work more seriously. At a 2003 conference, encouragement from publishing professionals helped convince her that she had a story worth finishing and a place in the writing world.
Contests and short fiction marked the next steps. A historical story placed in the top ten of the Noble Theme Contest in 2003. Her short story “A Fair Chance” appeared in Romancing the Christian Heart in 2004, and a novel took first place in the San Gabriel Writers' League's Writing Smarter Contest in 2005.
Then came the call writers wait for.
Mowery signed her first professional contract with Barbour in 2006. Her first published novel, Where the Truth Lies, arrived in 2008 and was co-written with Elizabeth Ludwig. It introduced Casey Alexander, an amateur investigator who refuses to accept an easy explanation when her aunt's death is ruled a suicide. The later Massachusetts Mayhem books, Died in the Wool and Inn Plain Sight, keep the small-town mysteries, romantic undercurrents, and determined women at the center.
Her historical romances move west, and they like to put capable heroines in difficult situations. In Love Finds You in Silver City, Idaho, a scarred young woman and an undercover deputy marshal face danger in an 1869 mining town. The Colorado Runaway novels begin with When All My Dreams Come True, where ranch-minded Bobbie McIntyre meets cattle owner Jace Kincaid. When Love Gets in the Way and When Two Hearts Meet continue that mix of frontier trouble, romance, humor, and Christian faith.
Mowery also contributed to several multi-author series. Always Remembered places a love story amid the Texas fight for independence, from the siege of the Alamo to San Jacinto. Her Barncastle Inn story joins a set of short, light romances built around historical-themed stays at a Vermont bed-and-breakfast.
Her books tend to pair a practical problem with a personal one. A missing clue, a cattle thief, an unwanted marriage arrangement, or a dangerous accusation gives the characters something immediate to face. Underneath, the stories return to trust, forgiveness, courage, and the hope of building a life with someone else.
Earlier author biographies described Mowery as married with two sons and active in church life, including work with teens and church finances. Those everyday commitments fit the grounded feel of her fiction. Her characters may find themselves in the Old West, a mining camp, or a town full of secrets, but they still have to make hard choices, show up for other people, and decide what faith means when life gets messy.
