League of Literary Ladies Books in Order

The League of Literary Ladies series takes one of the coziest setups imaginable, a book club, and then makes it slightly ridiculous in the best way. The group comes together on South Bass Island on Lake Erie after a magistrate gets tired of neighborhood squabbling and orders several women to attend a discussion group. That is how Bea Cartwright, Chandra Morrisey, and Kate Wilder end up reading together, eventually joined by the more easygoing Luella.

The joke, of course, is that this forced literary club keeps stumbling into very real murders.

Bea is usually the center of the action. She runs a bed-and-breakfast and knows the rhythms of island life well enough to spot when something feels off. Around her are Chandra, a stubborn free spirit and cat lover, and Kate, who has her own winery and her own strong opinions. They are not a smooth, polished sleuthing team. They argue, they misread things, and they get on one another's nerves. That rough edge is what makes the group fun.

The island setting does a lot for the series. South Bass is a resort place with tourists, gossip, seasonal businesses, and people who know far too much about one another. Every change ripples. A restaurant opens, a retreat arrives, ghost hunters show up, celebrity twins buy property, and suddenly the whole island has an opinion. That makes murder feel both disruptive and personal.

Each title tips its hat to a classic work, from Mayhem at the Orient Express to And Then There Were Nuns, and that literary playfulness is part of the charm. The books are not trying to be academic. They just enjoy using famous titles and familiar story echoes to set the mood.

If you want a series that leans into community comedy, bickering friendships, and a very readable small-town mystery setup, this one is easy to recommend. The murders matter, but so do the island grudges, the book-club chatter, and the sense that these women keep solving cases in spite of themselves.
