Author bio

Casey Daniels is one of the many names used by Ohio writer Constance Laux, a novelist whose career has stretched across romance, paranormal mystery, cozy crime, young adult horror, and historical sleuthing. She was born in Cleveland and studied English literature at Queen's College in Oxford. Before fiction took over full time, she also worked in journalism, editing, and creative writing.

She has never seemed interested in staying in just one lane.

Her path into publishing started in the summer of 1990, when she began writing her first novel, The Fortune Teller. That book launched a long habit of switching voices and even names depending on the kind of story she wanted to tell. She has said that the name on the cover usually matches the kind of book inside, which helps explain why readers know her as Casey Daniels, Kylie Logan, Miranda Bliss, Connie Lane, Connie Laux, Zoe Daniels, and Anastasia Hastings.

That shape-shifting approach has given her bibliography a lot of range. As Casey Daniels, she created Pepper Martin, the smart-mouthed former socialite in Don of the Dead, a Cleveland cemetery guide who starts seeing ghosts after a blow to the head. As Kylie Logan, she moved into traditional mysteries like Button Holed, Irish Stewed, and The Scent of Murder. As Anastasia Hastings, she headed to Victorian England with Of Manners and Murder.

What ties those books together is not a single genre so much as a certain way of telling a story. Her heroines are usually capable women who get thrown off balance, then decide to dig in anyway. Some are chefs, some run shops, some answer advice letters, and some end up solving murders for the dead. They tend to be funny without trying too hard, and they usually live in places that feel specific, lived-in, and a little quirky.

Ohio keeps showing up, too.

Cleveland and its suburbs matter in her work, whether the setting is a historic cemetery, a neighborhood restaurant, or the artsy streets of the Jazz Ramsey books. Even when she heads elsewhere, she still writes with a strong sense of place. Readers who like local history, old buildings, tight-knit communities, and small details about jobs and hobbies usually have a good time in her books.

There is also a real affection in her work for odd corners of everyday life. Antique buttons. Chili cook-offs. Cadaver dogs. Advice columns. Ghost stories. Yarn shops. Those are not just gimmicks in her hands. They become the engine that drives character, humor, and suspense.

Today, Laux has remained rooted in northeast Ohio, where she has lived in suburban Cleveland with her husband and family. She has also spoken about her love of old cemeteries, dusty archives, the paranormal, and family history, which makes a lot of sense once you start reading her mysteries. Across all her names, that curiosity is the constant. The setting may change and the tone may shift, but her books keep circling back to secrets, second chances, and women who are sharper than the people around them first assume.
