Pepper Martin is probably Casey Daniels's best-known heroine, and it is easy to see why she stuck. Pepper begins the series as a former rich girl whose life has come badly undone. After her father's conviction and the collapse of her comfortable world, she ends up taking the one job she can get, giving tours at Cleveland's historic Garden View Cemetery.
Then she hits her head on a headstone and starts seeing dead people.
That is the engine of the whole series. Pepper can hear ghosts, and they are not shy about asking for help. Most of them want what the police never gave them, justice, answers, or a way to settle unfinished business. Pepper would often rather shop, flirt, or avoid danger altogether, but the dead do not give her much choice. So book after book, she gets pulled into cases that mix murder investigation with local history, celebrity legends, family secrets, and the odd politics of cemetery life.
The books are set in and around Cleveland, and that setting matters. Garden View is not just a spooky backdrop. It is a workplace, a landmark, and a place where the living keep colliding with the past. Over the course of the series, Pepper's role changes from tour guide to a bigger public-facing job at the cemetery, but the core appeal stays the same: a funny, reluctant medium trying to keep up with both the living and the dead.
Pepper herself gives the series its voice. She is vain, sharp, observant, and often much braver than she first appears. Her ongoing relationships, especially with police detective Quinn and doctor Dan Callahan, give the books a little romantic friction, but the main draw is always the next ghost and the next mystery.
If you like paranormal mysteries that stay light on their feet, this series delivers exactly that. The books have humor, a clear case in each installment, and just enough emotional weight to keep the premise from turning into a gag. Pepper may complain all the way through, but that is part of the charm.
