Author bio

Kylie Logan is one of the mystery names used by Constance Laux, a Cleveland-born, lifelong Ohio writer who seems to have been headed toward crime fiction from the start. She grew up with a Cleveland police detective for a father, and he did more than bring home stories. He read Sherlock Holmes, spent days off looking for stolen cars, and sometimes took his daughter along. Later, he worked in security for the Cleveland library system. Cops and books were both close at hand.

That mix stuck.

Before fiction took over, Logan studied English and worked in journalism, corporate writing, and teaching. She has said she loved stories early on but did not seriously try fiction until the 1980s. Her first published books were historical romances, and that early stretch matters because it helps explain why her mysteries are so readable. She knows how to move a plot, but she also knows how to make readers care about the people caught inside it.

She writes under several names, and the split is practical rather than mysterious. Different names let her signal different moods to readers. Casey Daniels is tied most closely to the Pepper Martin books, while Kylie Logan is the name on many of her cozy and traditional mysteries. That is where readers meet books like Button Holed, with its Chicago button shop and crafty sleuth, and Mayhem at the Orient Express, which drops a bickering court-ordered book club into murder on South Bass Island.

Food turns up a lot in her work, too. In Irish Stewed, chef Laurel Inwood lands back in small-town Ohio and tries to rescue her aunt's struggling restaurant, only to find a body in a booth. The same series continues with French Fried and Italian Iced, and readers who like culinary mysteries tend to enjoy the mix of kitchens, community gossip, and a heroine rebuilding her life while solving crimes.

Then there is Jazz Ramsey.

With The Scent of Murder, Logan moved into slightly darker territory without losing the clear mystery structure that makes her books easy to sink into. Jazz works at an all-girls school in Cleveland and volunteers as a cadaver dog handler, a setup that gives the series a stronger investigative feel. The Secrets of Bones and A Trail of Lies keep that edge, while still holding on to the warmth and character focus that run through all of Logan's work.

Across all these books, certain things repeat in good ways. Logan likes capable women who are not polished superheroes. She likes niche worlds, buttons, cook-offs, book clubs, old cemeteries, neighborhood restaurants, because they come with their own rules and rivalries. She also returns again and again to Ohio, especially Cleveland and Lake Erie country, which gives her stories a lived-in feeling instead of a generic backdrop.

She has published more than sixty novels since her first book appeared in 1992.

These days she is a full-time writer living in northeast Ohio with her husband, David, and their dogs, Lucy and Eliot. Away from the keyboard, she gardens, knits, weaves, does cross stitch, digs through archives, and still has a soft spot for old cemeteries. That last detail feels exactly right. Her books are full of ordinary places, local history, odd corners, and the sense that if you look closely enough, every quiet little world is hiding a story.
