Author bio
Layla Reyne grew up in North Carolina and later spent fifteen years in California, two places that continue to shape the settings, family ties, and coast-to-coast energy in her fiction. She has called herself a Carolina Tar Heel, and her books often carry that mix of Southern roots, California speed, and a strong sense that home can be something people build together.
Writing was always close by. In school, Reyne gravitated toward writing classes and competitions, and a twelfth-grade English teacher pushed her to take the work seriously through a yearlong portfolio project. She also wrote screenplays in college.
Fanfiction was the next big step.
Reyne has said that fanfiction led her deeper into both romance reading and romance writing, then eventually to a shelf of original books. That path helps explain the things her stories return to: tightly connected casts, lingering emotional threads, sharp dialogue, and endings that make room for the people who have become family along the way.
Her early breakout, Single Malt, introduced FBI agents Aidan "Irish" Talley and Jameson "Whiskey" Walker. Aidan is carrying grief from a devastating loss, while Jamie is a talented cyber agent who has wanted him for years. Their partnership moves through investigations, danger, and a slow-burn relationship. The wider Whiskey Verse also makes space for other couples, friends, and colleagues whose lives keep crossing in useful, chaotic ways.
She likes a plot with moving parts.
That shows up in Imperial Stout, where an FBI agent and a federal prosecutor get pulled into a case involving a missing witness and a dangerous crew. In the Fog City books, the stakes are even more tangled, with assassins, criminal empires, undercover work, and characters trying to change the futures they were handed. Reyne's suspense stories make room for action, but the emotional question is usually just as important: can these people trust someone enough to let them stay?
Reyne also writes outside the crime-and-danger lane. Relay and Medley follow elite swimmers working toward Olympic gold while managing old feelings, team pressure, and the public demands of sport. Dine with Me turns toward food, travel, and a relationship between a struggling chef and a doctor over the Christmas season. Her food-centered books make kitchens, bars, restaurants, and shared meals feel like places where people can take stock of what they want.
Then there is the paranormal side. Icarus and the Devil opens the Soul to Find series with a reluctant operative, a vigilante ex-cop, supernatural danger, and an extremely bad plan that becomes a rescue. Across the series, shifters, reapers, magic, fate, and the conflict between Nature and Chaos broaden Reyne's interest in found family and hard-won connection.
A 2016 Golden Heart finalist in romantic suspense, Reyne has built a catalogue that moves comfortably between FBI cases, rival athletes, dangerous families, small-town undercover jobs, and food-filled contemporary romances. The pairings vary, but queer characters finding lasting love are central.
Off the page, she has described herself as a serious foodie, a fan of television and movies, and someone who enjoys cooking and mixing cocktails. That practical love of food, entertaining, and a good action plot turns up often in the books. There are car chases, yes, but there are also dinners, dogs, family gatherings, and people learning that asking for help can be its own kind of courage.
