The Jefferson Tayte mysteries follow an American professional genealogist who makes a living tracing lost relatives, testing family stories, and working through the frustrating gaps in old records. Tayte is good at finding people who do not want to be found. That skill repeatedly pulls him into crimes that have been buried for generations.

The series begins with In the Blood, when Tayte travels to Cornwall to investigate the disappearance of a Loyalist family more than two centuries earlier. From there, each book gives him a new case with its own historical thread. A wartime adoption mystery, a possible royal conspiracy, a forgotten maritime disaster, and a stolen Victorian portrait are all part of the mix.

The past is never safely past here.

Most stories switch between Tayte's present-day investigation and events from an earlier era. The historical settings range across England, Scotland, Germany, and India, while Tayte's research can take him from archives and village graveyards to old houses, private collections, and places where the people asking questions are not especially welcome. The tension comes from connecting a clue in an old document to a threat that is very much alive now.

Tayte is not a police detective. He is a researcher, and his methods reflect that. He follows names, dates, photographs, letters, wills, shipping records, and the small inconsistencies that suggest someone has hidden the truth. He is also adopted, so the question of identity is more than professional for him. That thread becomes especially important in Kindred, where he begins looking seriously into his own origins.

The books work as historical mysteries with thriller stakes. Cases generally have a complete central mystery, so readers can enjoy many of them on their own, but reading in publication order gives more weight to Tayte's personal life and his evolving relationships, including his partnership with historian Jean Summer. The Girl in the Painting is a shorter novella and a particularly easy entry point for newcomers.

Expect secrets, danger, and a lot of patient digging before the answers arrive. The series keeps its focus on the human cost of hidden family histories, whether the secret began in a village during the Second World War or in a London home generations earlier.
