When the Man Comes Around

by Bradley Wright

2018

Once a rising FBI star, Lawson Raines lost his wife, his daughter, and ten years of his life to a frame-up that put him behind bars. Pardoned but far from free, he digs into the conspiracy that destroyed him, trading safety for a shot at revenge and truth.

Series background & context

The Lawson Raines books are smaller in scale than Bradley Wright’s spy sagas, but they cut just as deep. Instead of globetrotting operatives, this series follows one broken man trying to claw his way back from a ruined life.

Lawson Raines used to be a rising star in the FBI. Then his wife and young daughter were killed, and a rigged case put him behind bars for a crime he did not commit. Ten years in prison carved away most of his old self. What comes out on the other side is someone he barely recognizes, a man who calls himself a monster because it feels honest.

In When the Man Comes Around Raines is finally pardoned, but freedom does not come with peace. The people who orchestrated his downfall would prefer their secret stay buried in the Nevada desert. Dodging hired guns, corrupt power brokers, and old colleagues who no longer know which side he is on, Lawson chases the truth behind the conspiracy that stole his family and a decade of his life.

The follow up, Shooting Star, moves him to Los Angeles in search of a fresh start that never quite materializes. Hired into the fringes of the film world, he quickly discovers that Hollywood’s glitz hides a much darker underbelly. When a woman is shot on his property, Lawson and his partner Cassie are dragged into a tangle of powerful producers, cartel players, and lies that could easily finish what prison started.

Throughout both novels, Wright leans into noir touches, letting the settings do some of the talking. Las Vegas is bright and merciless, full of people who know how to make bodies disappear. Los Angeles is glamorous and hollow, a place where stories are manufactured and truth is a commodity.

Lawson himself carries the weight of those places. He is capable and dangerous, but the books never forget how much he has lost, or how uncertain he is about what kind of man he wants to be now. That tension — between revenge and some thin hope of redemption — is what keeps his cases from feeling like just another round of bullets and clues.

If you want crime thrillers that stay close to one complicated protagonist and dig into how he survives, Lawson Raines is where to look.
