Series background & context

The Alexander King novels follow a covert operator the CIA keeps off the books and in the shadows. Alexander King is the man they call when polite diplomacy fails and the cost of getting it wrong is measured in cities, not headlines.

Before this series opens, a mission turns personal and King makes himself disappear to protect the people he loves. His family buries a body they believe is his. Washington’s enemies think the same. For a while he moves like a ghost, taking the odd job and trying to live a quieter life that never quite fits.

In The Secret Weapon that anonymity is shattered when King pulls a woman away from a car bomb in London. The rescue drops him into a knot of terrorism and politics that stretches all the way to a U.S. presidential campaign. A ruthless mastermind is not trying to topple America from the outside, but to gain control of the levers on the inside.

Each book pushes King and his small team into a different corner of that dangerous world. They chase bioweapon threats and viral outbreaks, race against kidnappers and cartel bosses in places like Mexico and Haiti, and hunt enemies who hide behind boardrooms and election stages instead of ski masks. More than once, King discovers that the people signing his orders may be part of the problem.

The series never stays in one place for long. One story might send King from the streets of Mexico City to back channels in Washington. Another throws him into a chaotic Haiti, where a missing president and a drug war collide. Later books find him trying to live like a civilian with Natalie, only to be dragged back in by an old foe, or standing in the nation’s capital when a crippling attack targets the president himself.

At its heart, though, the series is about a man trying to balance lethal skill with a conscience. King is smart, stubborn, and more than a little scarred by everything he has done in the name of security. His loyalty to his team, and to the people he has already lost too much to protect, is what keeps him moving when the odds are ridiculous.

If you like globe-spanning thrillers built around a tight-knit crew, moral gray areas, and big, cinematic set pieces, the Alexander King books give you a front-row seat to one crisis after another.
