Author bio

Kylie Brant was born and raised in Iowa, and she has kept those Midwestern roots close. She graduated with high honors from the University of Northern Iowa, later worked as an elementary special education teacher, and built a writing career while raising a large family. She is a mother of five and still lives in Iowa.

Writing started for practical reasons as much as dreamy ones. In 1990, after deciding not to pursue a doctorate, she was teaching full time, caring for five young children, and reading everything she could get her hands on. Her favorite authors were not producing books fast enough, so she began making her own.

It worked faster than she expected.

Brant has said that writing helped save her sanity during those crowded, noisy years, and her publishing story has a nice twist. The second manuscript she sent out sold first, in 1992, and not long after that the first manuscript sold as well. Early books like McLain's Law, Rancher's Choice, and An Irresistible Man introduced readers to the mix she would keep refining: danger, desire, stubborn people, and high-pressure choices.

Her early career is full of cops, ranchers, bodyguards, and undercover operatives. Books such as Guarding Raine, Undercover Lover, and the Alpha Squad novels show how comfortable she is with romantic suspense that moves quickly but still leaves room for character. The attraction is important, but so is the case, the threat, or the rescue that keeps both leads off balance.

Then she pushed further into darker territory.

Series like Mindhunters and Circle of Evil gave her room to lean harder into profiling, forensics, serial predators, and the long shadow of trauma. Later books including 11, Pretty Girls Dancing, Cold Dark Places, and Down the Darkest Road keep that same intensity. Readers who like wounded but capable heroines, small-town secrets, and investigations with a psychological edge tend to find a lot to like in her work.

One thing that stands out across the whole bibliography is how often Brant writes about people who have survived something hard and are still trying to build a life afterward. Sometimes they are cops or marshals. Sometimes they are witnesses, teachers, reporters, or women who know too much. The settings change, from Philadelphia streets to Iowa woods to the Michigan Upper Peninsula, but the emotional pressure stays sharp.

Her books have reached a wide audience. She has written more than forty novels, her work has been published in thirty-five countries and translated into nineteen languages, and she has picked up a long list of nominations and awards along the way. Those include two overall Daphne du Maurier Awards, a Career Achievement Award from Romantic Times, and three RITA nominations.

She is married to her high school sweetheart, which feels fitting for a writer so interested in loyalty, history, and the people who know us longest. Even when her plots turn violent, the emotional stakes are usually close to home.

These days Brant remains based in Iowa, and her work still carries the same grounded feel it had at the start. She writes suspense with a human center, and even after dozens of books, she still seems most interested in what people do when fear, loyalty, and love all show up at once.
