Kingdom of Claws

by Quinn Loftis

2023

Series background & context

The Kingdom Shifter series introduces an entirely new supernatural race to the Quinn Loftis universe, beastwalkers. These are magical beings who can shift into powerful animal forms, but only if they find and bond with their animi, human women whose presence unlocks that ability. For centuries the beastwalker kingdoms have hidden in plain sight, ruling from within human cities while their subjects move unnoticed through the crowd.

In Kingdom of Claws, readers meet Lola Katz, a nineteen year old New York waitress known for three things, talking too much, loving paranormal romance novels, and having vitiligo that makes her feel both invisible and exposed. When she starts seeing men with animal like features, she thinks she is losing her mind. Then she meets Callon Leo, the lion prince of the Kingdom of Claws, and learns that the things she thought were daydreams are very real.

Lola’s discovery that she is an animus pulls her into politics and danger she never asked for. Animi have been hunted and exploited in the past, and someone has restarted the trade in stolen human mates. Callon must choose between treating Lola as a duty to his kingdom or as the person who is changing everything he thought he knew about love and leadership.

Kingdom of Fangs shifts focus to Katy Dire, Lola’s fiercely loyal friend. Kidnapped by serpents from the Kingdom of Venom, she learns that she too is an animus, meant for the wolf ruled Kingdom of Fangs. As snake king Azure schemes to use her power for his own ends, a legendary warrior from Fangs, Gage, becomes determined to rescue the woman fate has tied to him.

In Kingdom of Venom, Azure fights to regain his lost throne and grow his strength by creating counterfeit animi, using a voodoo priestess and dark magic. Katy finds herself cursed and bound to the lives of other captives, while Gage and the allied kingdoms race to stop Azure before war erupts across every realm.

The forthcoming Kingdom of Silk looks beyond princes and kings to Maddie Newsom, a human shaman drawn into the Kingdom of Silk and into a dangerous bond with Roan, a hardened warrior from Claws. Their story hints at wider conspiracies and the possibility that the beastwalker world is on the brink of a transformation.

Across the series, expect fast paced plots, vivid city and kingdom settings, banter filled relationships, and romances that grow out of danger rather than convenience. The beastwalker courts may obsess over power and lineage, but the heart of the story stays with human women who are suddenly told they are vital to a world they never knew existed.
