The Time Of Kings

by Stephanie Hudson

2025

Thirty years after saving the world with Draven, Keira discovers that motherhood can demand even more courage than war. When their children are pulled back through time, she follows, landing in the brutal era where her husband was once a very different kind of king.

Series background & context

An Afterlife Story is a duet that answers the quiet question left after the main Afterlife Saga closes its final page: what happens to Keira and Dominic Draven decades later. Instead of ending with a neat curtain call, Hudson sends them on one more impossible journey, this time through time itself.

In The Time Of Kings we meet a Keira who has lived, loved and raised children with Draven. The world saving battles are behind them, but parenthood brings its own terrors. When their children are threatened in a way that reaches beyond their current timeline, Keira does what any fiercely protective mother would do. She follows them back, thrown hundreds of years into the past, to an era when Draven ruled a very different kind of kingdom.

This younger Draven is still a conquering king, not yet the nightclub owner readers know. Kidnapping, crown politics and the casual brutality of his age are normal to him. Seeing Keira again without the history they share forces both of them to face how much of their love is fate and how much is choice. For Keira, the challenge is surviving in a court that sees her as property while trying not to break the future she left behind.

The Time Of Queens twists the knife a little further. Once again Keira finds herself a puppet of Fate, dropped into a version of the past where Draven does not know who she is to him. This time she hides in plain sight, taking on the role of a maid while watching him struggle between his duty to find his prophesied Electus and the growing, unexplainable pull he feels toward the servant in his halls. Keeping her identity secret becomes both protection and torment.

Across both books Hudson plays with all the things that made the original saga so compelling: prophecies, crowns, the tug of destiny and the messy, human core of a love that refuses to die. Familiar faces like Pip and Sophia drift through, older now, with their own stakes in how the past is rewritten. The stories are shorter and more focused than the main saga but no less emotional.

For long time readers this duet feels like coming home and then walking deeper into the house. It revisits beloved characters, complicates their history and offers new answers without erasing what came before. For anyone curious about how a relationship as intense as Keira and Draven's survives thirty years and the meddling of Fate, An Afterlife Story is where to look.
