Author bio

Katie Fforde was born Catherine Rose Gordon-Cumming in Wimbledon, London, in 1952, and grew up in a family where books and storytelling felt completely normal. Writing runs in the family: her sister Jane Gordon-Cumming is also an author, and their grandfather was Sir William Gordon-Cumming.

As a young woman she spent years in and around London before settling in the Gloucestershire countryside with her husband, Desmond Fforde, whom she married in 1972. They raised three children and eventually moved to the Cotswolds near Stroud, the stone towns and green hills that keep turning up in her fiction.

She didn’t get serious about being a novelist until after her third child was born, when she realised that the stories she loved reading were also the ones she wanted to write.

Like many romance writers she first tried her hand at short category romances, learning structure and pace while fitting writing around family life. Her full-length breakthrough came with Living Dangerously in 1995, a contemporary love story about café worker Polly Cameron in a small Gloucestershire town that borrowed heavily from Fforde’s own job in a wholefood café and her affection for slightly scruffy English market towns.

Since then she has written a long run of stand-alone novels, usually set in modern-day England or Scotland, following women at turning points in their lives. Her heroines are florists, auction-house porters, gardeners, B&B owners, midwives, cooks and would‑be artists, often starting again in a new town or career in their thirties or forties and discovering that it’s not too late to want more.

Research is part of the fun for her. Over the years she has worked as a porter in an auction house, tried pottery, refurbished old furniture, explored how online dating businesses operate and even attended a Ray Mears survival course, all so she can write more convincingly about the jobs and worlds she gives her characters.

Several of her best-known novels, including Summer of Love and Recipe for Love, have won Romantic Novelists’ Association prizes, and she twice took home their Contemporary Romantic Novel of the Year award in the early 2010s, a straightforward sign of how many readers connect with her warm, down-to-earth stories.

Away from the page she has put a lot of energy into helping other writers. She founded the Katie Fforde Bursary for unpublished authors, spent years on the committee of the Romantic Novelists’ Association, chaired the organisation from 2009 to 2011, later became its president, and in 2010 agreed to serve as patron of the UK’s first National Short Story Week. She has also supported local projects such as the Stroud Contemporary Fiction Writing Competition, part of the Stroud Book Festival.

These days she lives in the Cotswold countryside, balancing family life, dogs and a steady writing routine. She continues to publish a new novel most years, including a recent sequence of 1960s‑set stories that begins with A Wedding in the Country and carries on through A Wedding in Provence, One Enchanted Evening and From London with Love, each one blending period detail with the same hopeful, character‑driven romance that has defined her career.
