Series background & context

Katie Maguire is a Detective Superintendent in Ireland's Garda, investigating violent crime in Cork and the surrounding county. Graham Masterton's series follows both her cases and the pressures of being a senior police officer. She must interpret evidence, protect potential victims, and contend with resistance within her own workplace. The books combine police investigation with disturbing crimes whose roots can reach into local history, private grievances, and the hidden lives of apparently familiar communities.

White Bones begins when the remains of eleven women are discovered on a remote farm. The deaths belong to the past, but a new disappearance raises the possibility that the old violence has a present-day connection. Katie must investigate a case in which physical evidence and ancient legend appear intertwined. The first novel establishes the series' interest in events that unsettle a whole community, while giving Katie the immediate task of identifying and stopping a human killer.

The bodies are only the beginning of the investigation.

In Broken Angels, the discovery of a mutilated corpse in the Blackwater River leads towards another urgent inquiry. Further killings suggest a pattern that cannot be contained by a quick explanation or a desire to avoid public attention. Such cases put Katie between the demands of a methodical investigation and the fear that someone else may be attacked before the work is finished. Cork is therefore more than scenery. Its rivers, rural areas, institutions, and police relationships provide the places and people through which each inquiry develops.

Katie's continuing life links the separate cases. Masterton portrays a capable officer dealing with personal difficulties as well as professional opposition. Some male colleagues resent her advancement, adding another layer to decisions already made under pressure. Her authority does not remove the need to defend her judgement or manage competing demands. The ongoing character story gives the investigations a cumulative effect: the reader follows a person living through them, rather than meeting a different investigator whenever a new crime appears.

These are dark crime thrillers with graphic violence and a strong interest in the damage offenders inflict. The emphasis falls on the process of pursuing dangerous people and the difficulty of protecting those within their reach. Although folklore can shape a case's imagery or history, Katie's role remains that of a police investigator. Interviews, bodies, patterns, and competing explanations matter because they must lead to an understanding of what has happened and who may still be at risk.

White Bones provides the starting point for Katie's world, followed by Broken Angels and the later investigations. Each main novel presents a case, while the continuing protagonist supplies the longer thread. Reading from the beginning makes it easier to follow her personal and professional circumstances alongside those cases. The series offers a recurring Cork setting, an experienced female detective, and investigations whose grim subject matter puts both resolve and judgement under sustained pressure.
