Author bio

Kate Cann is an English writer of fiction for young adults whose books often begin with a teenage character wanting more room to breathe. Her stories take first love, friendship, family pressure, and the wish to get away seriously, without making them feel bigger than life.

She wrote stories and kept diaries when she was young, but she did not set out with a fixed plan to become an author. English was the subject that stuck. She studied English at the University of Kent, then completed a master’s degree in American literature.

After university, Cann worked as a copy editor at Time-Life Books in London. It was useful training. She learned how books are put together, sentence by sentence, and she read closely for a living.

Then she started editing fiction for teenagers and thought she could have a go herself.

After the birth of her two children, Cann worked from home as a freelance copy editor. While editing teen novels, she felt that books about sex and relationships too often treated them as either terrible disasters or dreamy nonsense. She wanted to write about the awkward middle ground, where people want closeness but are still learning how to speak up for themselves.

Her first novel, Diving In, introduced Coll, a swimmer who falls for the compelling but pushy Art. The books that followed, including In the Deep End and Sink or Swim, keep their focus on attraction, consent, arguments, and the hard work of becoming your own person inside a relationship.

Cann also writes with a strong sense of place. The Beach books send young women to Greece, Spain, California, and a Mediterranean island, where a holiday can become a chance to make a different choice. In Possessed and Consumed, Rayne leaves a crowded London life for the countryside, only to find an old estate with a deeply unsettling past. Leaving Poppy takes family strain and turns it into a quiet, creeping supernatural thriller.

She does not avoid the messy parts.

Other books shift the setting but keep that interest in independence. Hard Cash follows a young artist whose sudden money changes his choices. Leader of the Pack looks at a rugby captain pulled by team loyalty and a demanding new coach. In the dystopian fantasy Witch Crag, Kita and her friends run from a harsh, unequal society toward a place everyone has been taught to fear.

Cann has said that memories, old diaries, and the conversations of the teenagers around her all fed into her work. That rings true in her fiction. Her characters can be impulsive, jealous, funny, and wrong, but they are usually trying to work out what they actually want.

She has lived in the Wiltshire countryside with her husband. Away from the desk, her interests have included reading, running, walking, gardening, and trips back to London. It is a good fit for an author whose books move easily between busy city lives, close friendships, and the relief of getting out into the open air.
