Author bio

Isabel Cooper writes historical paranormal romance and fantasy romance filled with magic, danger, capable people, and relationships that have to survive more than awkward first meetings. Her public author bio places her in Boston, where she has worked in legal publishing and made time for writing alongside a collection of happily nerdy interests.

Her first novel, No Proper Lady, arrived in 2011. It introduces a future soldier sent back to Victorian England to stop the disaster that created her demon-ravaged world, then pairs that big premise with a romance that is just as important to the story.

That book set a clear pattern for Cooper's work. She likes to take familiar romance setups, then put them under pressure from magic, monsters, war, secrets, or a very inconvenient trip through time. Her heroines tend to have practical skills and a strong sense of purpose. Her heroes may be guarded or burdened by duty, but they have to learn how to become useful partners rather than simply taking charge.

The Englefield books continue the Victorian setting of No Proper Lady. In Lessons After Dark, the focus moves to a school for children with unusual gifts, where a former medium and a magically gifted doctor confront a threat in the woods. These stories blend drawing rooms, lessons, séances, and supernatural trouble without losing sight of the people caught in the middle.

Cooper later turned to dragons, first in the Victorian-set Legend of the Highland Dragon, The Highland Dragon's Lady, and Night of the Highland Dragon. The MacAlasdair clan can shift between human and dragon forms, a secret that makes every new ally, investigation, and romance risky. The later Dawn of the Highland Dragon books take readers back to medieval Scotland, where the clan's long struggle against English power and dangerous magic is still unfolding.

Dragons are not the only threat in her fiction.

With the Stormbringer books, Cooper builds a secondary world still scarred by ancient storms, monsters, and a god-driven war. The Stormbringer follows Sentinel Darya and the general she awakens from a century-long magical sleep. The Nightborn moves to political intrigue in a city-state, while Blood and Ember sends two longtime allies into the heart of a corrupted battlefield. The wider conflict connects the books, but each one gives a different couple room to carry the story.

Readers who enjoy Cooper often come for the mix of romance and adventure. Her books make room for alchemists, healers, teachers, soldiers, detectives, knights, and monster hunters, people whose work matters when danger arrives. The emotional stakes usually grow alongside the magical ones, so trust, loyalty, grief, and attraction all have consequences.

Outside the page, Cooper has described enjoying video games, ballroom dancing, polyhedral dice, and other geeky hobbies. That combination tracks with the novels. There is real affection for strange old magic, dangerous quests, and the small details of how people get through a hard day. Even when dragons or demons are involved, the characters still need to make plans, solve problems, and decide whom they can trust.
