Series background & context
The Crow Girl books follow Lily, a teenager who feels unseen at school except when other girls are making her life miserable. She is lonely, unsure of herself, and tired of being treated as an easy target. Then she begins spending time in the woods, where a group of crows gives her a strange new sense of connection and confidence.
The series starts with Crow Girl. Lily’s bond with the birds, and the dark style she begins to build around it, helps her imagine herself differently. The mood has a faintly gothic edge, especially around the woods, the crows, and Halloween, but the heart of the story is Lily’s fight to stop believing the worst things people say about her.
It is about finding a way to take up space.
Cann keeps the books short and direct. The language is accessible, while the topics are recognizably teenage: bullying, friendships, body image, crushes, anger, and the nerve it takes to speak when staying quiet seems safer. Lily is not instantly fearless, and the series does not treat confidence as a switch that can simply be turned on.
In Crow Girl Returns, Lily has begun to change, but the girls who have bullied her are not suddenly gone from her life. She has friends who want her to be strong without becoming cruel herself, and she must work out how to hold onto the identity she has found. The crows remain both companions and a symbol of the bolder version of Lily she is trying to become.
Crow Girl Rises brings the conflict forward again when bullying spreads to younger students. Lily and her friend Marsha decide that having more confidence should mean doing something for people who are now facing the same treatment Lily once endured. The stakes stay close to school and everyday life, which makes Lily’s choices feel personal.
Read the books in order, beginning with Crow Girl, because Lily’s growing confidence and relationships carry through all three. This is a quick, readable series for readers who want a little eerie atmosphere alongside a story about standing up to bullies, finding supportive friends, and deciding who you want to be.
