Author bio
Karen Templeton writes contemporary romance about people whose lives are already busy before love shows up. Her characters have kids to raise, homes to repair, jobs to keep, family history to untangle, and sometimes a ranch or two that needs saving. The romances matter, but so do the everyday details around them.
She grew up in the East, where she studied art, ballet, and drama. She was accepted to the North Carolina School of the Arts as a drama major, then switched to costume design. That early interest in theater stayed with her. Writing later gave her a way to build a whole production herself, from setting and dialogue to the people at the center of the story.
Templeton spent about twelve years in New York City and worked a range of jobs, including assisting costume designers, working in department-store buying offices, and answering phones for a sportswear company. New York also brought her husband, Jack, and the first two of their five sons.
Then the family moved to New Mexico.
Before becoming a full-time writer, Templeton ran a mail-order crafts business from home. When the family bought its first computer, she began working on romance manuscripts and submitting them. Her debut novel, Wedding Daze, arrived in 1998, beginning a long run of category romances for Silhouette and Harlequin.
Her books tend to make room for the messier side of building a life with someone. A single parent may be figuring out how to trust again. A widow may be trying to hold a family together. A returning hometown hero may have to face the person he left behind. Templeton often puts these people in close-knit towns, where old stories travel fast and neighbors are hard to avoid.
Family is never just background in these novels. It is usually part of the problem, and often part of the answer. Children, grandparents, siblings, old friends, and reluctant co-parents all get a say. That gives books such as A Mother's Wish, Welcome Home, Cowboy, A Gift for All Seasons, and The Real Mr. Right their warm, lived-in feel.
Three of her Special Edition romances, A Mother's Wish, Welcome Home, Cowboy, and A Gift for All Seasons, received RITA Awards. She has also written connected series including Wed in the West, Babies Inc., Guys and Daughters, Summer Sisters, and Jersey Boys.
Her later author notes describe her as a transplanted Easterner making a home in New Mexico, raising five sons, and enjoying the small, funny chaos of family life. That perspective runs through the work. These are love stories, certainly, but they are also stories about making a home when life has not gone according to plan.
