Series background & context
The Men of Mayes County is a six-book contemporary romance series set in and around a small Southwestern community. The stories are connected by familiar local faces, shared history, and the fact that people who come to town looking for answers usually end up finding more than they planned.
The series begins with Saving Dr. Ryan and follows a succession of couples whose lives overlap through work, family, and the local community. The books have a wider emotional range than their title may suggest. Fathers, children, grief, new responsibilities, and difficult pasts all play a part.
In Fathers and Other Strangers, widow Jenna Stanton has raised her niece Blair from birth, without knowing who the child's father is. The answer leads her to retired detective Hank Logan, a man who has no idea he is about to become a father. The question is not only whether they can make a romance work, but whether they can learn to become a family.
The county is a place where private lives do not stay private for long.
Other novels bring in a builder caring for a frightened boy, a former ballerina stranded with a widowed farmer and his six children, and men who must decide whether their old assumptions about duty and love still make sense. Everybody's Hero and Swept Away especially show Templeton's interest in unexpected households and people learning to ask for help.
The books work as stand-alone romances, but reading them in sequence gives more context for the guest lodge, local families, and side characters who return. The continuing community is the series' anchor, not a single ongoing mystery or central couple.
Expect emotional, family-minded romance with a small-town setting and a practical sense of how difficult life can be. The heroes are not always ready for the roles waiting for them. The women are not looking to be rescued. Together, they have to figure out what home means.
