Author bio

Julie Mulhern was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and her fiction keeps circling back to the city she knows best. She grew up there, reading Agatha Christie and other classic mystery writers, and later got a close look at Kansas City society through jobs that put her near fundraisers, arts events, and the kind of social calendars that can hide a lot of sharp elbows.

Before writing fiction full time, Mulhern worked as society editor for The Independent and as corporate relations manager for the Kansas City Symphony. That background matters. The old houses, the country club rules, the parties, the polite smiles that don't always mean peace, they all found their way into her stories.

The mystery habit started early.

Mulhern began writing seriously around 2012. The first manuscripts did not make her an overnight author. She revised, learned from critique partners, listened, and kept going. By 2014 she had deals in both mystery and historical romance, and The Deep End introduced readers to Ellison Russell, an artist and mother in 1970s Kansas City who keeps finding bodies at the worst possible times.

Then Ellison found a body.

The Country Club Murders became Mulhern’s main calling card. Books like Guaranteed to Bleed, Clouds in My Coffee, and Back Stabbers mix murder with bridge games, family pressure, bad marriages, strong coffee, and the slow changes women were pushing through in the 1970s. Readers come for the puzzle, but they tend to stay for Ellison, her daughter Grace, her formidable mother Frances, Detective Anarchy Jones, and a house full of animals and opinions.

Mulhern also writes the Poppy Fields Adventures, starting with Fields' Guide to Abduction. Those books trade Kansas City country club gossip for action-cozy chaos. Poppy is a Hollywood-connected influencer who stumbles, then sometimes charges, into cartels, assassins, smugglers, dirty money, and global trouble. She has style, a sharp survival instinct, and a Chihuahua who should not be underestimated.

Her historical side shows up in Bayou Moon and Bayou Nights, which bring romance, ghosts, crime, and old New Orleans together. More recently, Murder in Manhattan launched a 1920s mystery line with Freddie Archer, a flapper and nightlife columnist chasing stories through speakeasies, theaters, fashion houses, and murder scenes.

Mulhern lives in Kansas City with her husband. She has two grown daughters, and she still mines the local social world, vintage magazines, antique malls, and the weird glamour of earlier decades for story fuel. The result is fiction that treats murder seriously enough to matter, but never forgets that family, fashion, food, dogs, and coffee can steal a scene.
