Series background & context

Judith Singer is one of Susan Isaacs's great suburban sleuths, funny, sharp, impatient, and much too alive for the life she is supposed to want. In Compromising Positions, she is living in Shorehaven on Long Island with a proper husband, young children, and a routine that feels respectable but airless. Then a local dentist, Bruce Fleckstein, is murdered, and Judith starts poking into the case.

Judith is very good at seeing through respectable surfaces.

That is the heart of the series. These are murder mysteries, but they are also sly, observant books about sex, class, marriage, money, and the theater of suburbia. Shorehaven is full of polished manners, good lawns, and private messes. Judith moves through it with a running commentary that is funny, skeptical, and wonderfully alert to hypocrisy. She notices vanity, status panic, and the little lies people tell to keep their lives looking tidy.

The first novel also sets up one of the series' lasting pleasures, Judith's chemistry with homicide lieutenant Nelson Sharpe. He has the badge and the official case. She has curiosity, nerve, and a knack for hearing what people are not saying. Their push and pull gives the books both romantic tension and comic energy, and it helps keep the mysteries grounded in real emotion instead of pure puzzle solving.

When Judith returns in Long Time No See, years have passed and her life has changed. She is now a widow, her children are grown, and she has earned a doctorate in history. But Shorehaven has not gotten any simpler. The disappearance and murder of Courtney Logan, the town's picture-perfect mother, pulls Judith back into sleuthing through a case that touches neighborhood gossip, mob family ties, and the old force of appearances. The shorter Compliments of a Friend fits neatly into the same world. When glamorous executive Vanessa Giddings dies and the verdict is suicide, Judith cannot leave the story alone.

If the Corie Geller books lean a little more toward thriller territory, the Judith Singer stories stay rooted in character and social comedy. The crimes matter, but so do the marriages, the resentments, the bad manners, and the tiny humiliations that make Judith's observations so sharp. These books are mysteries, yes, but they are also about what happens when a smart woman stops pretending not to notice.
