The early books follow Celia as she adapts to a body with new limits and dangerous new abilities. In Siren Song, her heritage turns out to be far more complicated than she expected. Demon Song pushes her toward a crisis involving a breach between worlds. Later entries bring magical bombs, a zombie-like plague, threats against Sirens, and old magical feuds that demand more than a bodyguard's usual skills.

The series is set in a recognizable modern California, but the version of it on the page is crowded with secret supernatural communities. Los Angeles glamour sits beside working neighborhoods, police investigations, occult politics, and the daily logistics of someone who has to be careful about food, sunlight, and who might be trying to use her powers. That mix gives the books a grounded feel even when the threat is wildly magical.

Celia remains the center of the series.

She can be tough, sarcastic, frightened, and exhausted, sometimes all at once. The books do not treat her transformation as a shortcut to easy power. Every gain has a cost, and Celia keeps having to decide who to trust when vampires, mages, Sirens, and human authorities all have their own plans for her. Romance is part of the story, but so are friendship, family damage, work, and the hard work of claiming an identity that other people keep trying to define.
