Patchwork Circle is a smaller, warmer corner of Judith Pella's work. Instead of empires, revolutions, or railroads, the series is built around a church community, a quilting circle, and young people in 1880s Oregon trying to understand love without making too many fools of themselves.

They do make fools of themselves, at least a little.

The first book, Bachelor's Puzzle, begins when the women of Maintown hear that a new circuit-riding preacher is coming, and that he is unmarried. They decide to welcome him with a quilt, but the project quickly turns competitive as mothers and daughters realize the bachelor minister might also be a marriage prospect.

Zack Hartley is not the polished preacher everyone expects. He is awkward, kind, and more likely to help with chores than deliver a smooth pastoral visit. His clumsy goodness makes him appealing, but he is also carrying a secret. The question is not just who might win his attention. It is whether the truth will break the trust he is slowly earning.

Sister's Choice keeps the quilting-community setting but turns the focus to Maggie Newcomb. Maggie is not naturally gifted with a needle, and Emma Jean Stoddard makes sure she knows it. Maggie wants Emma Jean's son Colby to notice her, so she tries to turn herself into the kind of young woman she thinks he wants.

Then Tamara Brennan arrives, poised, wealthy, and hard to compete with. Maggie's plan to win Colby grows more tangled when she draws Evan Parker, a young lawyer back from Boston, into her schemes. The fun comes from watching Maggie learn that wanting to be chosen is not the same as knowing who is right for you.

The tone is gentle, romantic, and lightly comic. Faith is present in everyday choices: honesty, humility, service, and the slow work of growing up. Quilting matters because it gives the women a shared place to talk, compete, teach, and heal.

Start with Bachelor's Puzzle. Sister's Choice can be followed on its own, but Maggie's story lands better after you have seen the circle form around Zack.
