Author bio
JP McLean grew up in Toronto, Ontario, where books were part of family life early on. She remembers sitting with her father and tracing the words in library picture books as he helped her sound them out. The reader came first.
Years later, McLean headed west to attend the University of British Columbia. She studied business, built a career in human resources, and fell hard for the coast, its mountains, beaches, forests, and shifting weather. Vancouver and the surrounding islands became home.
Before she began publishing fiction, she and her husband spent several winters in warmer places, including Mexico and Arizona. Returning to Denman Island for a dark, rainy winter gave her a problem to solve: how to keep a sun-starved mind busy. She had been reading urban fantasy and thrillers, and a recurring dream about flying gave her a starting point.
She opened a laptop and began writing.
That story became Secret Sky, the first novel in The Gift Legacy. It introduces Emelynn Taylor, a young woman whose strange gift causes terrifying, uncontrollable flights and pulls her toward a hidden community of people like her. McLean built the series around secrets, family history, romantic complications, and the practical danger of having an ability no one else can know about.
The six-book sequence continues through Hidden Enemy, Burning Lies, Lethal Waters, Deadly Deception, and Wings of Prey. The companion novel Lover Betrayed revisits the events of Secret Sky through Jackson Delaney's eyes. Readers who like supernatural suspense with a strong central character, close relationships, and conspiracies that keep widening will find plenty to follow here.
McLean later launched the Dark Dreams novels with Blood Mark. This time, the setting is Vancouver and the lead is Jane Walker, a woman marked by vivid red birthmarks and plagued by nightmares that may be glimpses of real danger. The book mixes a personal mystery with a race to understand what Jane's visions mean before they put her, and others, at risk.
Her stories tend to put impossible things into recognizable Canadian settings. Characters deal with fear, loyalty, grief, attraction, and the uneasy question of whom to trust, even while confronting gifts that have a very real cost.
McLean lives with her husband on Denman Island, one of British Columbia's northern Gulf Islands. When she isn't writing, she gardens, cooks, and enjoys being in or near warm water, whether that means swimming, snorkelling, or scuba diving.
