Author bio

Joanne Pence was born and raised in San Francisco, and that city runs all through her fiction. Its neighborhoods, food, fog, and odd corners show up again and again, especially in the Angie Amalfi and Rebecca Mayfield mysteries. Even when she writes far from the Bay Area, there is usually the same feel for place, the sense that streets, kitchens, houses, and landscapes matter just as much as plot.

She studied journalism at U.C. Berkeley and earned a master's degree there, then built a working life that gave her plenty to draw from. Over the years she wrote for magazines, worked for the federal government, and taught school in Japan. That range shows in her books. They move easily from everyday work and family life to murder, old secrets, romance, and the occasional brush with the supernatural.

Food was never just decoration in her work.

Pence is best known for her long-running Angie Amalfi mysteries, which begin with Something's Cooking. Angie is a gourmet cook and food writer in San Francisco, and the series mixes murder, romance, humor, and recipes. Readers who like cozy mysteries often come to these books for the food and the banter, then stay for the growing relationship between Angie and homicide inspector Paavo Smith.

She later returned to that world in a few different ways. The Inspector Rebecca Mayfield books shift the focus to a tougher, more procedural lead, while the Angie & Friends books lean a little more into haunted houses, weddings, and family chaos. The newer Cook and Inspector mysteries revisit Angie and Paavo in updated form, starting with Death on a Silver Platter. If you like seeing an author play with familiar characters from different angles, Pence gives you a lot to dig into.

Then there is her other side.

With the Ancient Secrets novels, beginning with Ancient Echoes, Pence moves into bigger, darker territory. Those books follow archaeologist Michael Rempart through stories filled with alchemy, history, old manuscripts, buried relics, and supernatural danger. They are a long way from a cozy kitchen, but they keep the same interest in character, place, and the ways the past refuses to stay buried.

She has also written romance, suspense, and historical fiction, sometimes under the name JoMarie Lodge. Books like Dance With A Gunfighter, The Ghost of Squire House, and The Dragon's Lady show how comfortable she is moving between subgenres. One book may be a ghost-touched romance, another a Western revenge story, another a historical tale tied to San Francisco's past.

Awards and honors have followed along the way, including recognition for both her mysteries and historical work. Just as telling, though, is the sheer spread of her catalog. Pence has spent years building connected series, trying new forms, and returning to characters readers clearly did not want to leave behind.

She now makes her home in the foothills near Boise, Idaho. That distance from San Francisco has not dimmed her connection to it. If anything, it seems to have sharpened it, and readers are the lucky ones, because she keeps finding new ways to return there.
