Inspector Rebecca Mayfield Mystery Books in Order

The Rebecca Mayfield mysteries spin out of the Angie Amalfi world, but they have a different energy from the first page. Rebecca is a homicide inspector in San Francisco, serious about her work, disciplined, and used to pushing herself harder than the people around her. Where Angie tends to tumble into cases through curiosity and heart, Rebecca walks in through the front door with a badge, a case file, and a lot to prove.

She is not there to play.

That said, this is still Joanne Pence, so police work is only part of the story. The long-running spark in the series comes from Rebecca's relationship with Richie Amalfi, Angie's cousin. Richie is charming, secretive, streetwise, and connected to corners of the city Rebecca does not fully trust. He can help her, mislead her, frustrate her, and make her question both her instincts and her rules, sometimes all in the same scene.

That push and pull gives the books their shape. Rebecca is a by-the-book cop, or at least she tries to be. Richie is not. He knows people, hears things, and moves through gray areas that make Rebecca uneasy. Yet time after time, murder cases force them together. One book may start with Richie accused of murder. Another may pull Rebecca toward mob ties, old academy connections, psychic fraud, city corruption, or bodies buried so long they have turned into history. The details change, but the basic tension remains: how much can Rebecca trust Richie, and how much can she trust herself when he is involved?

San Francisco again plays a big role. Nightclubs, beaches, City Hall, Chinatown, old neighborhoods, and hidden back channels all feed into the investigations. The books feel more procedural than the Angie series, but not grim. There is romance, humor, and plenty of character interplay around the sharper edges.

Rebecca herself is a strong anchor.

She has had to fight to get where she is, and the series does not forget that. Her job costs her time, softness, and sometimes safety, but it also gives the books their backbone. She is tough without being cold, vulnerable without becoming passive, and her growth across the series is one of its pleasures.
