Shine

by Jodi Picoult

2016

A prequel short story to *Small Great Things*. It introduces Ruth Jefferson as a child starting at a prestigious new school, where she first encounters the subtle and overt racism that will shape her life and career.

Series background & context

Ruth Jefferson is the kind of nurse you hope for when you check into a hospital. She is a veteran of the labor and delivery ward in Connecticut, boasting twenty years of experience and a spotless record. She has spent her entire career—and really, her entire life—working twice as hard to get half as much credit. She has built a respectful, quiet existence for herself and her teenage son, believing that professional excellence is the best defense against a world that judges her by her skin color.

That defense shatters during a single shift.

The catalyst is the arrival of Turk and Brittany Bauer. They are expecting their first child, but they are also deeply entrenched in the white supremacist movement. Upon seeing Ruth, Turk demands that no African American staff members touch his baby. Shockingly, the hospital administration complies. A bright post-it note is stuck to the file, and Ruth is ordered to stay away from the patient.

It is a humiliating directive, but the situation turns tragic when the baby goes into cardiac distress while Ruth is alone in the nursery.

She is paralyzed by a terrifying dilemma: does she intervene and violate direct orders, or does she stand back? She hesitates. The baby dies. Ruth is subsequently charged with negligent homicide, setting the stage for the primary novel in this grouping, Small Great Things.

The story that follows isn't just a courtroom thriller; it is a deep dive into the complexities of prejudice in the justice system. Ruth’s public defender, Kennedy McQuarrie, is a well-meaning white lawyer who insists that bringing race into the courtroom will lose the case. She wants to argue that this was a medical tragedy, not a racial one. Ruth disagrees. As the trial progresses, the narrative forces Kennedy—and the reader—to confront uncomfortable truths about power, privilege, and unconscious bias.

While Small Great Things covers the adult Ruth’s darkest hours, the accompanying short story, Shine, offers a glimpse into the light that guides her.

Functioning as a prequel, Shine transports us back to Ruth’s childhood. It describes a pivotal summer when a young Ruth is introduced to the stars by her grandfather. It is a tender, poignant look at the moment she realizes the world is not a level playing field. This backstory provides crucial context for the armor she wears as an adult. It shows us exactly where she learned that she had to shine brighter than everyone else just to be seen.

Reading these two works together offers a full, three-dimensional view of Ruth Jefferson. One story shows us the resilience of a hopeful little girl, and the other shows us the courage of a woman who finally decides she is done being silent.
