Author bio

Jeff Carson is a mystery and thriller writer from Colorado's Front Range, where he lives with his Italian-born wife and their two sons. He is best known for the David Wolf series, a long-running set of mountain town crime novels, and for the Italy-set Ali Falco books.

Long before he published a novel, Carson spent family road trips crossing the wide open West, listening to audiobooks in the car. Those hours with fast paced crime stories and big name thriller writers gave him a feel for timing, tension, and the kind of hero he wanted to follow.

Years later he found himself far from Colorado, living for nearly a year in Italy with his wife and young son. The distance from home and a nagging sense that he wanted a different kind of work finally pushed him to act. During that stretch he decided to commit to writing fiction and set himself a clear deadline for making it his full time job.

Carson promised his wife he would write and publish ten stories before even thinking about giving up. He taught himself the nuts and bolts of self publishing, drafted every day, and learned to take criticism on the chin. Early books were revised, re-edited, and sometimes relaunched as he sharpened his skills.

The first David Wolf novel, Foreign Deceit, grew directly out of that Italian season. It sends a Colorado deputy to Lake Como after his brother's suspicious death, blending the fish out of water tension of Italy with the grounded grit of a working cop. Back home in the fictional ski town of Rocky Points, books like The Silversmith and Cold Lake drop Wolf into tight local politics, long buried secrets, and weather that can kill as quickly as any villain.

Over the course of the series Wolf rises from deputy sergeant to sheriff and chief detective, carrying the scars of military service, family trouble, and bad decisions. Novels such as Rain, Drifted, Divided Sky, and High Road keep returning to the same core questions, how far will a decent person go to protect the people and place he loves, and what does justice look like in a small mountain county with big city problems.

With the Ali Falco series, beginning with The Como Falcon and Tuscan Blood, Carson flips the lens. Here the lead is a Tuscan police officer who divides her time between Siena, the wine country around Montalcino, and her fraught hometown on Lake Como. The cases are knotted up with family history, old money, and the uneasy line between beautiful landscapes and the darker things people hide there.

Across both series, his stories favor clear stakes, physical danger, and a steady thread of humor and warmth. Readers often point to the sense of place, whether a snowbound Colorado pass or a narrow Italian alley, and to the way everyday worries about parenting, aging parents, and strained friendships sit next to kidnappings, murders, and political pressure.

Carson still writes from Colorado, often drawing on hikes, mountain drives, and trips back to Italy for texture. When he is not drafting or revising, he spends time with his family, plays outside in the high country, and keeps imagining new trouble for David Wolf, Ali Falco, and the people around them.
