Series background & context
The David Wolf series follows a former Army special forces soldier who has traded combat zones for a badge and gun in the high country of Colorado. David Wolf works for the Sluice Byron County Sheriff's Department, starting as a deputy sergeant and, over time, stepping into roles as sheriff and chief detective.
Most of the books are set in and around Rocky Points, a fictional ski resort town tucked into the Rockies. It is a place where tourists see postcard views, but Wolf deals with avalanche danger, thin air rescues, cabin feuds, and the politics that come with a small county built around moneyed visitors.
The series opens in Foreign Deceit, when Wolf leaves Colorado to investigate his brother's apparent suicide in northern Italy. That first case introduces the mix the books become known for, everyday worries at home tied to bigger forces abroad, and a lead character who refuses to let officials give him easy answers.
Back in Colorado, later novels throw Wolf at a widening range of crimes. One winter storm uncovers a body marked with a cryptic message. A severed head rises from the depths of a mountain lake. Cold cases tied to his late father resurface. Serial killers, cartel enforcers, corrupt officials, and ruthless local operators all pass through the valley, and Wolf usually finds himself standing between them and the people he cares about.
The supporting cast grows and deepens as the series moves forward. Wolf is raising a son, dealing with an ex wife, and leaning on a tight knit team of deputies who have their own flaws and loyalties. An on and off connection with FBI Special Agent Kristen Luke pulls him into federal investigations, Four Corners manhunts, and even trips to the rain soaked Pacific Northwest.
Each book focuses on its own central mystery or threat, so you can drop in almost anywhere, but there is a clear arc if you read in order. Promotions, injuries, old resentments, and new relationships all leave marks, and part of the draw is watching Wolf adapt as both a cop and a person while the stakes keep climbing.
In tone, the David Wolf books land between small town police procedural and high stakes thriller. Expect chases through snowy passes, tense standoffs in remote cabins, and plenty of forensic legwork, but also barroom jokes, awkward family dinners, and quiet moments on mountain trails. It is a series for readers who like their mysteries grounded in a real place, with a hero who earns every scar.
