Where should I start?
If you want his main Scottish crime series: A Litter of Bones → Thicker than Water → The Killing Code.
If you enjoy grittier, high action spin offs: Northwind → Southpaw → Westward.
If you like long running character arcs: Read A Litter of Bones through Here Lie the Dead in order, then pick up the Robert Hoon thrillers.
If you prefer to sample first in audio: Start with A Litter of Bones, then continue with Thicker than Water and The Killing Code.
Author bio
JD Kirk is the crime writing alter ego of Scottish author Barry Hutchison, the man behind DCI Jack Logan, Robert Hoon, and a growing cast of Highland detectives and villains.
Barry was born and raised in Fort William in the Scottish Highlands, where mountains, rain, and a small local library did their best to turn him into a writer. At nine, a librarian shelved one of his early stories like a real book, and the idea never really left.
Before he ever thought about serial killers and crime scenes, he spent more than a decade writing for children and teenagers under his own name. He created the Invisible Fiends horror novels, the comic fantasy The 13th Horseman, and dozens of other titles for major children’s publishers.
Those years came with a few milestones, national book awards, foreign translations, school visits all over the UK, and regular stints talking about stories at festivals and in classrooms. He also branched into comics and television, contributing to shows such as the CITV series Bottom Knocker Street as well as various animated projects.
Writing for adults started as a side project. Under the name Barry J. Hutchison he launched the anarchic sci fi comedy series Space Team and its spin offs, full of aliens, bad decisions, and jokes that arrive just before the explosions. To publish those books on his own terms, he set up the small press Zertex Media and discovered he liked running a business almost as much as blowing up planets on the page.
In 2019 he tried something new again. As JD Kirk he released A Litter of Bones, the first DCI Jack Logan novel, sending a weary Glasgow detective north to the Highlands to face an old case that never really went away. The book struck a chord, found a large audience online, and turned what was meant to be a one off into a long running crime series.
Since then he has written dozens more crime novels across the DCI Logan, Robert Hoon, and DI Heather Filson series, along with standalone thrillers and audio originals. His work has sold millions of copies, picked up prizes including the Kindle Storyteller Award for the Hoon novel Stateside, and taken readers from rain lashed Highland glens to neon lit Las Vegas casinos.
He likes stories where terrible things happen, but you would still recognise the people doing their best to cope.
These days he still lives in Fort William, juggling far too many series from a house he shares with his wife, two children, and a memorably annoying dog. When he talks about JD Kirk in the third person, he is only half joking, and he maintains that he genuinely has no idea what the initials stand for.
