Series background & context

The DCI Logan books are the core of Barry J Hutchison's crime fiction under the JD Kirk name. They follow Jack Logan, a senior detective whose career was shaped, and scarred, by a child murder case that never truly left him alone. When the series opens with A Litter of Bones, Jack is already carrying years of damage, and the books never let him forget it.

That sounds grim, and sometimes it is. But these novels are not misery machines.

What makes the series work is the balance between dark cases and the people trying to solve them. Logan is stubborn, sharp, and often exhausted. Around him is a team that becomes more important with every book, including Ben Forde, Hamza Khaled, Tyler Neish, Sinead Bell, and the rest of the Major Investigations crew. Their teasing, loyalties, and occasional chaos give the books warmth even when the crimes are ugly.

Setting matters too. These are Highland police procedurals, and the landscape is never just decorative. The books move through Inverness, Fort William, remote villages, castle grounds, fishing towns, tourist beauty spots, and roads where help can feel very far away. A locked room in a storm, a body by a loch, a killer hiding inside a tight-knit rural community, these stories get a lot of mileage out of the way isolation changes a case.

Most of the novels work perfectly well as individual mysteries. One book may hinge on a missing child, another on mutilated bodies, livestreamed kidnappings, dead rock stars, or violence inside an old castle. But there is a longer emotional thread underneath. Logan's past, his relationships, his enemies, and the aftershocks of earlier cases keep carrying forward.

That ongoing thread is a big part of the appeal.

If you want the fullest version of this crime world, this is the place to begin. The Robert Hoon books and DI Heather Filson novels spin out from here, but Logan and his team are the center of gravity. Read them for the murder puzzles, stay for the banter, the bruised humanity, and the Highlands atmosphere that ties it all together.
