Series background & context

The DCI Logan Crime Thrillers follow Detective Chief Inspector Jack Logan as he chases killers across the Scottish Highlands, from rain soaked city streets to tiny villages on the edge of nowhere. The books blend police procedure with dark humour, sharp dialogue, and a strong sense of place.

When readers first meet Jack in A Litter of Bones, he is a Glasgow cop still haunted by the child murder case that made his name. Ten years earlier he put away a killer known to the press as Mister Whisper, and the fallout left him with a broken marriage, a drinking problem, and the kind of nightmares that do not fade just because the file is closed.

A new missing child investigation drags him north, and from there the series settles around Inverness and the wider Highlands. Logan’s Major Investigations Team tackles everything from gangland executions in Glencoe to vigilante killings in midwinter, influencer kidnappings, cold cases, castle murders, and the long running Mister Whisper storyline that resurfaces in A Whisper of Sorrows.

Jack himself is a familiar kind of detective, stubborn, battered, and secretly softer than he wants people to believe, but he never works alone. Over the books you get to know DI Ben Forde, DS Hamza Khaled, DC Tyler Neish, DC Sinead Bell, and the rest of the team, along with pathologist Shona Maguire and an ever expanding cast of witnesses, suspects, and recurring friends and foes.

The cases can be brutal, but the banter and affection inside the team keep the stories from turning bleak.

One of the series’ strengths is how it balances standalone plots with a bigger emotional arc. Each novel gives you a complete mystery, yet relationships shift, old traumas resurface, and characters grow older and more complicated. Logan’s personal life, from his messy past in Glasgow to his attempts at something like happiness in the Highlands, matters just as much as catching the killer.

Readers who enjoy long series will also notice the wider universe building around these books. Former police boss Bob Hoon steps out of Logan’s shadow into his own action heavy thrillers, and DI Heather Filson anchors a separate Glasgow based series, while crossovers and cameos reward anyone who reads across them all. Even so, the DCI Logan novels remain the heart of JD Kirk’s crime world, and starting here gives you a front row seat as it all unfolds.
