Series background & context
The Robert Hoon books take one of Barry J Hutchison's most explosive crime characters and give him room to wreck things properly. Hoon is a former detective superintendent and former soldier who has alienated most of the world around him. He drinks too much, swears with real commitment, and solves problems in ways no police manual would ever approve.
He is also, in his own warped fashion, trying to do the right thing.
That is the tension that carries the series. In Northwind, Hoon is pulled back into action when an old army contact asks him to find a missing teenage girl. What starts as one private search opens into trafficking, abuse, and a criminal network with reach far beyond the Highlands. The later books widen the scale, but they keep that same pattern. Hoon gets involved because a case hits him personally, and from there the damage spreads.
These are not quiet mysteries. They are action-heavy thrillers built on pursuit, ambushes, dirty conspiracies, and the sort of decision-making that leaves buildings damaged and enemies very sorry they crossed the wrong man. Southpaw pushes Hoon up against the Loop, a powerful criminal cabal. Westward strips him down to survival. Eastgate and Stateside keep enlarging the world while holding onto what makes him fun to read, his anger, his battered conscience, and the very thin line between heroism and catastrophe.
Hoon himself is the point. He is rude, reckless, and often completely out of order, but he is never empty. The books keep finding small, telling moments beneath the insults and violence, and that is what stops him becoming a cartoon.
If the Logan novels are Barry J Hutchison's police procedurals, the Hoon books are the louder, bloodier cousin. They still share the same wider crime world, and readers who know Logan will catch extra texture, but Hoon's series has its own rhythm. Read it if you want danger, black humor, and a lead character who would be a terrible dinner guest and a very useful man to have on your side.
