Author bio

Jane Roberts was born Dorothy Jane Roberts in Albany, New York, on May 8, 1929, and grew up largely in nearby Saratoga Springs. She discovered writing early, filling notebooks with stories and poems before she ever thought about psychic work.

After attending public schools and taking classes at Skidmore College, Roberts set her sights on a literary career. Through the 1950s and early 1960s she published poetry and short fiction, and in 1963 her science fiction novel The Rebellers appeared in a mass market edition.

She married painter and writer Robert Butts, and together they eventually settled in Elmira, New York, balancing creative work with ordinary jobs and a modest upstate life.

In late 1963, while researching a book on extra sensory perception, Roberts experimented with a ouija board. What began as a writing project turned into something unexpected when a personality calling himself Seth appeared in the sessions and soon began speaking through her in trance.

From that point forward, Roberts and Butts held regular Seth sessions in their apartment. Jane spoke in trance while Rob took shorthand notes and later typed full transcripts. Over the next two decades they recorded well over a thousand sessions, ranging from private conversations to structured book dictations.

The early experiences were distilled in The Seth Material, and then in a series of books Seth was said to dictate directly, including Seth Speaks, Nature of Personal Reality, Seth, Dreams and Projections of Consciousness, and later works on health, mass events, and the psyche. The central thread in these books is simple but far reaching, the idea that consciousness creates reality and that beliefs, expectations, and emotions shape the lives we live.

Starting in 1967 Roberts also taught an evening ESP class in her living room in Elmira, where visitors watched Seth speak, experimented with their own abilities, and helped give the material a grounded, conversational tone.

Alongside the Seth work she kept writing under her own name. She explored altered states and personality in Adventures in Consciousness and Psychic Politics, wrote poetry volumes such as Dialogues of the Soul and Mortal Self in Time and If We Live Again, created the Oversoul Seven novels to dramatize ideas about reincarnation, and even produced a children's fable, Emir's Education in the Proper Use of Magical Powers.

Serious health problems began to limit her mobility in the late 1970s and led to long hospital stays in the early 1980s. Even then, Roberts continued to hold sessions from her hospital bed, material that later appeared in books like The Way Toward Health and Dreams, Evolution, and Value Fulfillment.

Jane Roberts died in Elmira on September 5, 1984, at the age of fifty five. After her death, Robert Butts oversaw the publication of the remaining transcripts and arranged for their papers, manuscripts, and recordings to be archived so that readers could see both the finished books and the very human process behind them.
